To be a good 2nd tier Big 10 team, you have to DEVELOP talent, you can't just recruit it.

Adrian Clayborn and ???

The only other prominent players from MO I see during Pinkel's last 10 years are Marvin McNutt (whom Iowa sold on playing QB - he didnt' trust Mizzou would give him a full shot at QB and would just convert him to WR) and Christian Kirksey (who was the #16 guy in the state in 2010).

Clayborn didn't go to Mizzou primarily because he was close friends with Aaron O'Neal and blamed the coaches for O'Neal's death. He wanted to get back to Mizzou a few years later and discussed it before rightly deciding not to waste a year sitting out as a transfer.

I'm not sure Frost is gone. Maybe. Keep in mind that Moos was hired mere weeks before Frost. The Frost hiring was done by Osborne and Co, with Moos basically on the sidelines. Moos would have no allegiance to Frost, given Frost was hand-picked by the Husker establishment before Moos was even in the picture, so he could have fired Frost prior to his demise.

As someone mentioned, the B12 eliminating Prop 48 really hurt Nebraska's recruiting.

I know that the state of Nebraska put out a lot of talented players in the 70's-90's but that was partially due to the smash mouth style of football that offenses and defenses played during that time. Their demographics aligned better with that era. Now the name of the game is speed, and the state of Nebraska doesn't have enough of that to live on in-state recruiting alone. I think they recruited Florida and California a lot heavier when they were in the Big 8, but eventually started recruiting more to Texas due to the B12 affiliation. That was probably a mistake, as every team in that league was also trying to recruit Texas, in addition to LSU, Arkansas and a lot of the SEC West.

I think another factor, is that kids used to leave their home state more, because a team like Nebraska would be featured on nationally televised games, virtually every week.

In the 80's/90's, that would be a big deal for a kid from Mississippi (or wherever), versus say staying home and playing at Ole Miss that may be on two nationally televised games each year back then. Now basically ALL games are televised nationally, so players from the South/Cali/Texas are choosing 2nd tier local teams over teams like Nebraska.

I think switching to the B1G hurt them as well. Just like how the Big 8/B12 was experiencing a very excellent run during the 80's and especially 90's, the B1G became very good around the early 2000's when Ohio State really emerged. Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa all were pretty strong then too.

They've had a lot of bad coaching hires since Osborne. The best one was probably Solich, and they let him go right away because he was "only" winning 9 or 10 games a year.

They really need to get their next hire right. They need to find someone that can either recruit QB's extremely well.
I think there was a time when they had the best support facilities like weight room, dining, etc.

Now 1/2 of the power 5 schools have comparable facilities.

Didn't say they got everyone but Mizzou going from the shithole they were in late 80s and 90s to a top 25 program took a major dent in Nebraska's recruiting the two biggest metros closest to their campus. Wistroms, Rucker, Dan Alexander, Steve Warren, Bruce Pickens, etc. Nebraska used to come through state of Missouri and clean house recruiting the top blue chippers.

Yes, good point. Nebraska had top 10 facilities for most of the 70's-90's and the gap was often very wide. That gap shrunk as TV deals expanded revenue for many of the second and third tier programs.

Also, Boyd Epley was hired in the late 60's as the strength & conditioning coach. He is considered one of the godfathers of the S&C world.

He put Nebraska's S&C program way ahead of its peers by the 70's and it showed on the field. By the 80's all colleges had embraced S&C but it was ingrained at NU because they saw how Epley and Devany used it to build their program.

There weren't many schools that invested more into their S&C and nutritional programs back then. Now they basically all do, and knowledge in that field is a lot more readily available.
