Randy Moss admits pot use

Well, sure we all knew it... but to admit it to a reporter???

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/4017976

NEW YORK (AP) - Oakland Raiders receiver Randy Moss admits he has used marijuana since entering the NFL seven years ago and still smokes it "every blue moon."

"I have used, you know, marijuana ... since I've been in the league," Moss said in an interview for HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" scheduled to air Tuesday night. "But as far as abusing it and, you know, letting it take control over me, I don't do that, no."
When pressed whether he still smokes marijuana, the star receiver with the checkered past said: "I might. I might have fun. And, you know, hopefully ... I won't get into any trouble by the NFL by saying that, you know. I have had fun throughout my years and, you know, predominantly in the offseason.

"But, you know, I don't want any kids, you know, watching this taking a lesson from me as far as 'Well, Randy Moss used it so I'm going to use it.' I don't want that to get across. Like I say ... I have used (marijuana) in the past. And every blue moon or every once in a while I might."

The NFL's drug policy calls for up to 10 tests a month after one positive result. A second violation results in a fine equal to the player's salary for four games, a third in a four-game suspension, and a year's suspension for a fourth violation.

Moss has never been suspended for violating the league's drug policy and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said it is confidential whether the receiver is in the drug program or not.

"We evaluate all conduct related to substance abuse and it is handled confidentially by the doctors," Aiello said.

Moss was traded from the Minnesota Vikings in early March. He was limited by a hamstring injury last season and finished with 49 catches for 767 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was the first time in his seven seasons that he didn't reach 1,000 yards receiving.

Moss has had problems on and off the field throughout his college and pro career. He lost scholarships at Notre Dame and Florida State because of a battery charge and marijuana use. He set records at Marshall and clearly was the most dynamic receiver in the 1998 draft, but lasted until 21st overall because of his past trouble.

Last year, Moss was fined $10,000 for pretending to pull down his pants and moon the Green Bay crowd during Minnesota's playoff win. He also drew criticism for leaving the field with 2 seconds left in a regular-season loss against Washington.

Other transgressions include bumping a traffic control officer with his car in 2002, verbally abusing corporate sponsors on a team bus in 2001 and squirting an official with a water bottle in 1999.

Right...and Moss has to know this. Which leads me to believe that he probably is being honest here. He probably really does only use pot VERY rarely and he probably is totally in control of it.

If he was a pothead a la R. Williams, he'd never have admitted it because that would mean he would almost certainly get caught.

His admission leads me to believe that pot is something he doesn't feel like he NEEDS to do, so if he can never do it again because of his comments (as long as he's in the NFL), it won't bother him much.

Control or not, risking your multi-million dollar career to get high is about as stupid as it gets. At what point do you grow up, accept your responsibility, and realize there is more to life than getting stoned?

Although I disagree with his right to get stoned... he can do whatever the hell he wants to do.... but to admit it? Are we sure he didn't smoke a doob before the interview? now.... that was stupid. .

No argument there. It was, me, after all, who said right off at the beginning of this thread that I thought he was an idiot for admitting it.

But, it does sound to me like he's not all about getting stoned. THAT is Ricky Williams. Moss sounds like a very recreational user. I'm not saying that's okay, but certainly we all recognize that there is a difference between the serious pothead and the very occasional toker.

Even if he did, do you think the PR guy was seated next to him in the interview, telling him how to answer each question?

It was certainly idiotic to admit to this, but I doubt a PR guy would have helped.

By choosing "NFL player" for a job, he's basically forfeiting his "right" to get stoned.

I can't believe any adult would put getting stoned as a higher priority than keeping your job. Besides the money he's risking, he's also risking the success of his team and team mates.

Is smoking pot really so great that it's worth risking getting suspended and possibly fucking over everything your team has worked for? No.

IMO... no matter how stupid one is... they should know when/where to say something along those lines. On the couch with his buddies....okay. To a reporter... never okay. But...maybe he's just trying to fit in to the "badass" Raider image and doesn't give a flunk what anyone thinks. My guess... if he admits to it in the first place, he's using more than "once in a blue moon". sometimes, we say dumb things without thinking, like I said before, the guy was ripped during the interview. Smooooke em up, Randy!

I happen to believe, as a smoker, that nobody should be punished for smoking weed. But rules are rules, so Randy should sit out both of the Chiefs/Raiders games this season and we'll call it even.
