Kendrell Bell?

Kawika Mitchell is having the year he's having in no small part because of Bell's play. The same can be said of Derrick Johnson. The fact is, the guy's been involved in a number of plays, and he's been, I think, an important catalyst in the vastly improved rush defense. He's looked more comfortable of late dropping into zone in passing situations, too.

Now, would I like to see a little more pass rush presence? Sure, although frankly we don't seem to use him that way as often as I expected. But I'm not going to complain about what we're getting. He's not a bust, not in any way. The defense is better, clearly and obviously better, particularly at the linebacker position. We're good there, across the board, for the first time in my memory. So Johnson and Mitchell are reaping the benefits of that, building up the big (but ultimately empty) tackle stats. Big deal. Bell's been a part of the equation, too. A big part. We're playing better because he's on the field, same as with Knight and Surtain.

Maybe the stats aren't as flashy as we'd like, but the results, as a unit, are looking pretty good from where I'm sitting.

What is this? Logic? A cool head? Key insight?

The fact is, people such as myself and many others don't tape or TiVo a game and then go back and check like some folks here do. All we know is that:

a.) his name has hardly been called.
ii.) his blitzes suck.
C.) he's missed several key tackles.

Now, he could very well be doing the intangible things well. Which is good. But this team needs playmakers ... bad. I'm just not sure he's one of them.

All well and good, but he's being paid to shed blockers and make plays. His play could very well be an important part of the D's improvement. Or it could be Surtain. Or Knight. Or DJ. Or Mitchell's vast improvement. The bottom line is that his impact is extremely minimal in proportion to his contract.

When have you ever heard/seen Kawika say that it's pronounced Kavika?

Man, this is confusing. Like Patrick Surtain. Is it pronounced Sur- tan(ning lotion) or Sur- tane(rhymes with pain)?

I've defended Bell all year.... I keep saying it's a new scheme, he's getting his confidence back, he's not being utilized correctly..... blah blah...

But the fact is, we're paying him enough to be a playmaker. Yes he's stuffing the line and making a bunch of 3yd stops, but I think we've got young guys that could do the same thing. We brought him in to be a playmaker... and half way through the season he isn't living up to it. I hope it will turn into a Kawika type of growth into the defensive scheme, but I'm not seing it yet. He doesn't seem to be playing with much intensity. He's been an average LB that is getting the job done, but that's it........

maybe its the new system? i thought he was used to playing the inside? who knows. i thought he`d be making more bigger plays. maybe he has helped mitchell out,so mitchell dosnt have to worry about bell`s side anymore. who knows but the three as a group have been pretty good this year. besides i thought his contract was cheap this year.

If anyone can put up a clip of that early play where Carr was running to the right sidelines with Bell chasing him, I'd appreciate it. It looked like Mitchell was running twice the speed of Bell, but the disparity was so large that I have to think that it was just an angle oddity or something.

So he's strictly a two-down player. I thought that was the problem with paying Hartwell the big bucks, that he would never be on the field on 3rd down. If this is the case, Kavika is gonna get a $20 mil signing bonus when he becomes a free agent, simply because he's on the field in all situations.

I'm kind of in Keg's corner here though. As long as the entire defense is playing well, like they have the past 2-3 games, I'm not going to complain about Bell's Lew Bush-like production.
