One of the things I personally struggle with the most when it comes to moderation around here is the issue of racial slurs. Racial slurs range from the obvious (e.g., the "n" word) to the relatively innocuous (e.g., "cracker"). It's tough to tell where to draw the line.

So, here's a poll to help me better understand how people feel. There are thousands of words that could be construed as racial slurs out there, so this won't be a comprehensive list. But it'll cover most of the common ones that seem to crop up here and there.

I'll also mention that this poll has nothing to do with what appropriate action there might be for people using them. There will always be a lot of room for interpretation. The poll is merely to help me understand the range of feelings about the topic.

Allow me to explain my reasoning, Mr. BigVE ...

First of all, I believe that all English-speaking persons who post on this board should have full access to the entire palette of English language words available to them. This is the ideal solution.

Second of all, it isn't the particular word that's important, it's the "meaning" and energy the word carries with it. That's why, if you're a word-painter and you're going to paint a picture with words, you need all the words (or contextual meanings) at your disposal.

Third of all, some words were concocted for the express and sole purpose of demeaning another group. Therefore, the meaning these words carry is singular and pointed. They have one purpose and one purpose alone. And that purpose is to cause harm. The word, "****er" is one of those.

All the other words on the list (with the exception of "Kike") have other meanings. Gook can just mean goo, for example. Chink is a hole in a wall. The other words that are intended to describe a white person - "honky" and "whitey" - are ridiculous insults. So is "kike". If you can't insult somebody any better than that, you are in no position to insult anybody.

Therefore, the word, "****er" is the only one that is a problem in and of itself and, even though I'd prefer that the board not be censored in any way, it's the one word generally accepted as worthy.

Language is only a weapon against those who take offense to harmless words. That's all they are: words. The only harm they contain is the harm you attribute to them. I always yell "PECKERWOOD" when I pass a trailer park. They hoot and holler and wave their Confederate flags. They think it has something to do with a hard-on, I guess. I don't have the heart to stop and tell them differently.
