Grade Pre-season Game #3

I give this one a D....worst game of the pre-season so far. Pass coverage has got to tighten up....pass rush...well, we are still wondering what that looks like....

1 of 10 on 3rd downs I do believe....not going to cut it

And actually Mays didn't do very much tonight. Demorrio Williams had a lot of tackles, but most of them were of the Donnie Edwards 'drag the ball carrier down after a 5-yard gain' variety. I think they missed DJ.
The only problem I have with this is that I think that DJ is terrible in coverage, too. Perhaps a *bit* better than Mays, but the n00b is far better at the point of attack.

Pretty much how I see him, too. Except he regularly gets abused in coverage.

He has a nose for the ball. If his coverage skills improve he could be really good.

We'll just have to disagree on that. I think the way Seattle carved up the middle of the field is a testament to how much the defense missed both he and Page tonight. I'm not going to go overboard heaping praise on him, but I think he's had a good preseason up to this point. In fact I think everybody in the front 7 has, excluding Edwards.

If we really want to get into a 'best lb' debate, then I'd say that, assuming he can stay healthy, Vrabel might well get that nod by year's end anyway. He hasn't made any big plays but he's been pretty steady. Loved that open field tackle he made tonight. I made a comment in the game thread that I don't know that I've seen another Chiefs linebacker make that play here in the last decade or so. They always seem to whiff in those situations.

Now this wouldn't surprise me in the least, actually.

This was a great example of a player being assignment sound, and it's sad that this type of play, and rightfully so, seems so surprising from our defense.

Not as surprising now as it was a month ago. The defense is showing signs that they're getting better, I think. I mean, shit, they've only given up 47 points through three games. They gave up as many in the first two preseason games last year, and then another 24 in the third. And they just look better doing it. They're clearly stronger against the run and they're getting pressure on the QB without going blitz-crazy to do it.

They've got to get off the field on 3rd down was the biggest thing I saw from the starters tonight, but like I said, I think that's going to be a problem if their #1 corner, their top coverage safety and their starting coverage linebacker are all on the sideline.

What I want to see is what they look like when they're really scheming for a team, pulling out all the stops. I think there's more talent on that defense right now than they've had in years and they appear to be better coached than in recent memory, although they still show some of the same "play well for a while and then fall apart" tendencies. Except they seem to be able to recover, and they've kept teams out of the endzone when the offense has put them in bad situations. There are some positive signs...

VARSITY
Without reading all of the previous posts, my thoughts are:

RB's all played pretty well today.
The fumble where they walked off the field and LJ pointed at Thigpen made me laugh, but it was a sad laugh.
Jed Collins has to be smallest fullback since the 1920's.
Thigpen didn't help his cause tonight.
Gutierrez shouldn't be throwing up beach balls if he wants to make the team.
We need to go with two blocking tight ends and put Bowe out there by himself. He's our only receiver.
Quentin Lawrence greatly helped his cause tonight.
The African American modern cheerleader on that Pepsi commercial is a total babe.
You all may hate McIntosh, but I still think he's our best RT.
Our line can't run block very well, though we showed some hope in the first quarter, other than one play where Charles had to dodge a flying Goff five yards in the backfield.
Where's Herb Taylor?
What was the deal with the missed field goals today?
I hope Charles and Savage are our returners, not that they're spectacular.
Bernard Pollard is the second-worst safety on the planet. Dajuan Morgan is the worst.
Flowers rocks.
Why did we keep lining Colclough on Houshmandzadeh? Colclough shouldn't make this team.
I don't know why Demorrio Williams doesn't get more playing time. He's fast and a good tackler.
Tyson Jackson appears to be legitimate.
Dorsey was getting owned nearly all night. Who were the people here getting me all excited about him when he was drafted? I hate you people.

Explain to me how his coverage skills are going to improve in year 5?

IMO, he is what he is: An average linebacker at best.

Probably the same narrow minded assholes who tell you that a linebacker, tight end or a center/guard isn't worth a first round pick...

Funny as those are our greatest positions of need right now.

Hmm. I recorded the game while I was out. I had intended to watch it later, but I think I'll just hit myself in the head with a hammer a few times instead.

Thank God for the Cardinals.

What immediately strikes me is how devoid of talent this team is. You can see how obvious it is on special teams. Beisel should be our top special teams player, but, at least tonight, he was our best defensive player - by a large margin. When your special teams guys can't get under punts with hang times of 5 plus seconds, you've got serious problems. That means that your special teams guys, who should be the ones pushing the majority of starters at the athletic positions, suck really bad. Which in turn means your starters suck really bad.

Colquitt is the best player on this team, and other than he, Cassel, Albert, Bowe, Flowers and Jackson, this team needs more talent at every single position.

How does a NFL team get to be so bad? Damn you Carl. Damn you to hell.

You should watch it.

The running game kicked ass.
