ESPN: Ranking the AFCW Defensive Backs

Looks like Bill Williamson likes Eric Berry & thinks the Oakland backs will suck without Nnamdi. Same for Denver if they lose the ancient old aged Champ. Seems to like Sandy Eggo:

1. Nnamdi Asomugha, Oakland: This may change. Many league observers expect Asomugha to leave the Raiders when free agency starts. That would be a major hit to this list.

2. Champ Bailey, Denver: Bailey is aging, but he is still an elite-level player.

3. Eric Berry, Kansas City: Berry could be atop this list next year. The second-year safety appears to be a special player.

4. Quentin Jammer, San Diego: The veteran cornerback is underrated. He is a stalwart.

5. Brandon Flowers, Kansas City: He is a favorite of NFL scouts. He is becoming one of the better young cornerbacks in the league.

6. Eric Weddle, San Diego: He is a top safety and a playmaker.

7. Stanford Routt, Oakland: This is a big year for Routt, who just signed a big contract with the Raiders. He’ll be challenged if Asomugha leaves.

8. Antoine Cason, San Diego: Cason is an up-and-coming player. He was very solid is his first season as a starter last year.

9. Brandon Carr, Kansas City: Carr is a strong right cornerback. He and Flowers make a nice tandem.

10. Bob Sanders, San Diego: The new Charger has to show he can stay healthy. If so, he’ll be a great pickup.

11. Tyvon Branch, Oakland: Branch is a good, strong player, but he still has to improve.

12. Michael Huff, Oakland:
Huff is decent, not great. He could leave in free agency.

13. Andre Goodman, Denver:
He is nearing the end of his career, but he’ll probably start in 2011.

14. Brian Dawkins, Denver: This could be his final season.

15. Steve Gregory, San Diego: He is a solid role player.

16. Kendrick Lewis, Kansas City: Lewis and Berry could be a pair for years.

17. Chris Johnson, Oakland: He could start if Asomugha leaves and the youngsters aren’t ready.

18. Javier Arenas, Kansas City: He could be a good nickel for the long term.

19. Mike Mitchell, Oakland: It’s time for this 2009 second-round pick to make a move.

20. Rahim Moore, Denver: I have a feeling this second-round pick will be ranked much higher next year.

I think if the Chiefs' current DBs stay together for a few years they can become a dominant unit. They don't all need to be Pro Bowl types, although some of them will be. I think it's a deal where the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts.

Eh, I'd still put Champ Bailey in the top 3 in the division, but certainly he's not top 3 (or 5 for that matter) in the entire NFL. He's getting up there in age, but he's still athletic enough that his experience will overcome his age. He's still IMO a top 10 CB in the NFL.

It looks like that was a road game for Denver and that catch didn't happen last year because Bowe didn't have a single catch in the second game against Denver last year.

IDK, you could be right...If that's the case I blame it on GoChiefs for putting old stuff in a 2010 highlight vid.

Although at 3:20 it shows Champ whiffing on Bowe and allowing a TD. And yes, I know Denver was in zone. But that one is on Champ.

And what was that BS effort at 4:08? Once the ball is in the air he should have closed the gap and made a play on Bowe rather than just letting him catch an easy TD, regardless of the score.

remember the minor scandal last year when the raiders' coaches planned to cut mike mitchell, but al made them cut a better player to keep him? since he was the 54th best player on the team at best, they're correct that this is the year he needs to make his move.

Chiefs have the best secondary in the entire mother****ing NFL. and we're young too. There isn't another 4 starters I would take over ours as a whole.

He was top 3 in the NFL for one game last year.. the second game against Bowe. That was by far his best game of the year for just tight man-to-man coverage.
