Yeah, I generally think fast drivers aren't oblivious to what they're doing... they're comfortable driving fast and they generally pay attention to everything around them. OTOH, there's a larger percentage of slow drivers who poke along and are completely oblivious to what they're doing. They don't have the mindset of faster drivers, because then they'd be thinking about someone else. They are the people who drive 5 under the speed limit in the fast lane and then hit their brakes when you get a little too close for their comfort, or spend 4 minutes passing a semi. They're more dangerous than someone driving 5-10mph over.

The best, IMO...
Michigan (Detroit, specifically) -- enjoyed the 70mph within city limits... people generally drive about 10 over that and they really know what they're doing. Atlanta -- I've only driven through, but again, they drive fast and seem like they know what they're doing. The worst, IMO... Iowa -- doesn't help that BFE highway speed limits used to be like 60mph. Omaha -- Slow and pretty oblivious. Kansas City (MO and KS) -- I swear the threat of rain slows down traffic. I'll be on a 65mph section of I35 going 58 in the fast lane one minute, then a few minutes later get passed by people going 65 in a 55mph section of I29, just to pass those people when it goes to 65mph... if we want to ignore speed limits, can we all just go 80? And of course, no one knows what a fast lane is or what it might be used for...

The absolute, unequivocal worst is Florida. My mom lived in Sarasota, and west Florida is full of people who, quite literally, have NO reservations about dying. Gotta turn out of a parking lot onto a 55 mph highway? No problem, just go. Why look?
I consider Kansas City "sneaky dangerous". I've found that people in this city are TOO considerate and cause dangerous situations by being overly polite. I've seen people STOP in the middle of the street to allow a left-turning car to make the turn while the opposing traffic is light. It's incredible. Just obey the traffic laws and the situations work themselves out. You don't have to aggressively be the most polite person on the road. The most aggressive drivers I've seen are either in Nashville or Detroit, with the Philly/B'more metroplex close behind. Nashville speed limits are really just suggestions, while Detroit seems to have outlawed lane markings, and Philadelphians (Schuylkill expressway..) just make their own lanes if traffic is heavy enough. But nothing- NOTHING- equals Florida, which is just a mind**** experience. I think it has a lot to do with political lobbying making license renewal the easiest ****ing thing ever. Too many people in Florida have no business driving, but are continually allowed to do so, in order that politicians can be reelected.

Just voted SD b/c it was the only state to not get a vote. Results look like how I'd think they would. Elderly in FL, space cases and crazy freeways in Cali, then KS/MO drivers hating on ppl from the other state.

The only reason Maryland isn't ranking much higher in this poll is because most of the people here, I'm guessing, have never been there.
I grew up in Maryland, and just recently moved to Indianapolis. Drivers here are soft, marshmallowy, mewling-kitten types by comparison. People change one lane at a time, turn from the correct arrow, slow down before turning into a parking lot, and sometimes even stop at stop signs. It's unearthly. The entire DC and Baltimore areas are overdeveloped and neither has enough infrastructure. Washington is the worst traffic in the country except for New York City; the two Maryland counties that border it are either horrifically crime-ridden (Prince George's) or full of people who are in an eternal rush to do anything and get anywhere (Montgomery). Also, the construction never ends. In the snow, people abandon - yes, abandon - their cars en masse. It's really no contest. |

True, but I think he forgot how to drive after he left. That's one thing about this place, most people know how to burn a little gas and 99% of the time if some douche is hanging in the left lane, it's some clown from out of state.

I don't get all the California/Texas voting,I've driven practically everywhere and at least those states "know" how to drive i.e. if traffic is going 85 you keep up and IF you need to get over simply turn on your signal and begin to merge but DO NOT begin to ride your break like the numbnuts in Kansas.

I think the poll results are completely relative, to where people live. I have been to 46 of the 50 states, but most of the time, I'm here in MT. With that being said, most of the out of state people that drive through here, are from WY, ND, ID and WA.
WY: Because we have no sales tax, we get a shit load of people driving up here from WY, to shop. Most of them do well on the highway, but when some of them hit Billings, Mr. brain shuts down. Seriously, 15 in a 35? Really? You're holding things up pud whacker, either use the gas, or get the **** out of town. ND: These guys flat out fly as well, you get a left lane bone head once in awhile, but it's rare. One thing I have noticed about ND drivers is, they don't like to be passed. I will come up to them, switch over into the left lane to pass and they speed up. It's like they will lose their manly card and 3 inches off their dick, if they get passed. If I see I'm coming up on a ND driver, I'll just bust it up to around 95-100 for a short burst, until I dust them. Once you're past them, all is right with their world. WA: Ok, these guys are the kings of the left lane. They will NOT move, 95% of the time, unless you move 2.5 inches off their ass, lay the Smith & Wesson on the dash, or execute the pit maneuver. It's like they get some kind of prize and double their gas mileage, by not moving out of the left lane. I have had fun with a few of them in the past, in various ways. MN: these guys do well on the highway, are not left lane dipshits and don't drive like blue hairs in the Buick, for the most part. The exception, MN may be the land of 10,000, but I can tell it's not the land of the mountains. Most of these guys just freak out when they hit a mountain road. Lord help you if you get behind one of them heading up switchbacks. The only way you don't triple your trip time, it to get them to use a pullout.

Bwana, I 100% agree. I'd add Wisconsin drivers in with the MN drivers as well.

New Jersey in my personal experience. And it's not just driving. Try navigating through a Wal Mart in New Jersey, not even necessarily a busy one. Most places there's some semblance of order but in Jersey they literally will run their carts into your cart/ankles/ass to get where they want to go. And think it's perfectly acceptable and look at you funny if you protest. They drive the same way.
