Late night bullshit: The dog next door.

So there's a dog next door that's chained up in my neighbor's shitty yard.

The chain is short, about 12 feet or so. And this dog is never unchained, even though the yard is fenced in.

We've had run-ins with this neighbor before. He seems a bit "off."

Ultimately he's met the only legal obligations necessary in Greene County (I checked): the dog has a doghouse, and it is regularly fed and watered.

But it is never, ever, EVER off that chain. Far as I can tell, he never takes it on walks, never socializes with it, and just leaves it outside all day every day with a 12 foot radius.

The logical conclusion here, of course, is to mind my own business. But this dog deserves some semblence of a life, and as you may already know about me, I have an irrational soft spot for dogs.

Question: What, if anything, should I do?

I've come up with several ideas for helping this neglected dog:

1. Steal the dog.

2. Offer to buy the dog from the neighbor, then offer it to a no-kill shelter.

3. Offer to take the dog on a walk every day.

4. Buy a chain extension and stealthily attach it to the dog's chain, so he has 10 extra feet to be a ****ing dog.

This is really frustrating for me. This dog lives a terrible existence where he has zero social interaction and next to no space for him to roam. Utter neglect of your pet is not illegal, but it's definitely immoral. But my options are drastically limited. (I do chuck it some treats over the fence when I walk by, every day.)

Any other ideas are welcome, including telling me to sit on a pear.

I work in an apartment complex that allows dogs and I see this shit all the time. IMO, if you live in an apartment, you really shouldn't have a dog at all.

I can't stand it when people who live in apts get dogs.

If you have a dog, have a backyard w/ a damn fence. The dog deserves at least that.

If you don't have that, don't get a dog.

Absolutely. Unless it's a little dog.

I love dogs and hate irresponsible dog owners. And there are a ****ing ton of irresponsible owners. Like those that never take their dog on a walk, "because the dog pulls to much on the leash" so they can't. Like any dog knows how to walk on a leash without someone training them to do it.

Or leaving them in a crate 90% of the time, or on a chain, in a pen, etc.

But, unless there is a law being broken, I usually just bite my tongue and try not to dwell on it. Because as much as I think they suck as a human being, they have the right to suck as a human being. Best you can hope for is to talk to them and hope they aren't a complete asshole, but considering how they treat their dog, I wouldn't put much hope in that.

but seriously.....this is unacceptable and you are in a pinch. I'd be feeling like I MUST do something.

are you willing to take the dog in as your own? if so....I'd recommend asking the dude to purchase the dog. if not......I'd steal it and drive it to a shelter.....a no kill one.....far away.......OR try to find someone you know that would give it a home.

sucks man. people just ****ing SUCK!

PS - I do believe it's a proven fact that a chained dog is more likely to be a vicious dog.

I lived in an apartment and had a dog. We used to take her on walks and to the park on a daily basis. Did she have the "freedom" of being stuck in a backyard so that she could do whatever she wanted to? No. But it's not like she was crated up either. In fact...we didn't put her in a crate when we left. So she was able to roam around the house and sleep on the couch.

But I guess I should have never owned her though....right?

This isn't Tombstone or an episode of Game of Thrones. You can't go around assaulting people and kicking them out of a place in which their name is on the lease because you don't agree with their pet ownership.

I agree. My neighbors are complete ****nuts. They know damned good and well not to try and get jiggy with me about anything, because I'll them straight-up to kiss my ass.

Neighbor 1: Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard. Brings all his little dipshit buddies over to work on "cars" that look like a bad internet meme.

Neighbor 2: "Chico" from the Chico and The Man. Has 6 to 8 cars in his front lawn with a mini car-lot in back. I'm surprised the mother****er isn't running a quick-lube and used tire shop on the side of the house. Oh La Vey!
