NFL source: Chiefs facing "abyss"

http://www.kctv5.com/story/30243233/...s-facing-abyss

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As bad as the first five weeks have been for the Chiefs, it could get a lot worse.

That is the verdict of one long-time NFL executive.

"I don't have to be there to know how bad it is inside their offices and locker room," he said. "When you lose a game like Sunday's loss to the Bears, there's a real hangover."

That makes sense, KC blew a 17-3 lead against a poor Chicago team to fall to 1-4 on the season. Two of those losses came at home, and they were in games that the Chiefs seemed to have in hand. Offensive mistakes and poor defense fueled the defeats.

But, as bad as that is, it could lead to bigger problems.

"The concern for Andy is that the guys stop buying in," he told KCTV5. "If they stop listening to coaches, or start pointing fingers at each other, this could really get ugly."

The long-time exec has always been a big fan of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, but he said Reid is in a dangerous situation.

"I think the players respect Andy," he said, "But if the owner undermines him in any way, that could change. It could really implode."

Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt personally selected his head coach and general manager John Dorsey, so it would appear highly unlikely that he would do or say anything to put the leaders of his franchise in a bad light. Even when faced with firing former GMs Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli, Hunt did nothing in advance to put his GMs in a bad position.

The NFL executive told KCTV5 that he is also worried about the Chiefs quarterback.

"Alex Smith has been left 'naked,'" he said, "First, he had no offensive line and now he loses the main component of his running game. Good luck with that."

He said the loss of running back Jamaal Charles will make Reid's game-planning and play calling job a lot harder, and that an already weak Chiefs offense will have an even harder time moving forward.

He also said the problems extend to the defense.

"I think (Chiefs defensive coordinator) Bob Sutton's in trouble." he said. "I really like Bob, but that defense should be better."

The veteran exec has faced these kinds of issues himself, and he says he "feels for those guys." "I hope they get it fixed," he said.

So do the millions of Chiefs fans worldwide.

KC will play at Minnesota this Sunday. A game you can see right here on KCTV5. Kick off's at noon.

Why do all these damn articles continue to insist he's a victim to the problem when he's the biggest part of the problem?
He's not a victim, the team sucks. It's talented, but soft. I don't care if they're slagging because they are mental midgets, or they're slagging because they're throwing a QB temper tantrum. Manning is great, but playing like shit right now. Know what, the less talented defense of theirs DOESN'T GIVE A ****!! They're wrecking lives like they were paid professionals or something.

Finally, someone else says it.

... this is not to take away from Alex sucking either. He should be playing better football... but if not for the D shitting themselves at the end of two games... this team would be 3-2 right now.

But they're dead dog tired from being on the field 22 minutes out of a 60 minute game!!

The defense fed me to the creature. Already knew Alex was a lost cause.

First off, Clark never says anything. Second, Alex is not left naked, he just flat-out sucks.

Watch the games before you comment on something you know nothing about.

Just how in the media has Alex Smith to be absolved of being a terrible quarterback? He sucks but the blame always goes to Oline or WRs. He brings this team down.

I think it's a former colleague of Reid's, maybe even Joe Banner or Tom Heckert, that's cautioning Hunt from firing him because they're friends.

Clark has fired three head coaches and two GM's since taking over the Chiefs and realizes his friend's job is at stake as well.

Exactly. See above.

Reid reports directly to Clark Hunt so if he's fired, it would be Clark, not John Dorsey, dropping the axe.

If this team continues to lose, it's hard for me to believe that Clark Hunt will sit on his hands. That hasn't been his M.O., regardless of how much money it would cost him.

Because is Reids HANDPICKED solution at QB... Nobody wants to blame Reid for Alex's regression, so they deflect and place blame anywhere they can to avoid putting it where it belongs...

It's really Dorsey's job to get Reid the players other than his hand picked quarterback so I think if anybody is on the hot seat it's Dorsey.

Eric Fisher and Dee Ford don't help his case at all.

You mean that defense that held the Bears to ****ing 3 points for a majority of the game. That same defense who was let down by a shit ****ing QB who couldn't score more than 10 ****ing points against a shitty Bears defense that had two rookies at S?

Oh trust me, I blame them too. But giving up close to 30 PPG and allowing two TD's to a gimpy ****ler with NO receivers in the final 3 minutes is frustrating as all ****. These are just rants of what should be a Top 5 defense failing to even come close to expectations. You absolutely have to put teams like a banged up Bear team away.
