Bearcat made a good point. It sucks that there is hardly any competition when it comes to utilities. The only options I have are AT&T (only have up to 3mbps in my area), Cox (my current service), and perhaps you could do a satellite service like Hughes.net. For me, satellite internet is not an option because I like to play online games. My current service with Cox is $64/month. I get 30mbps upload, 3mbps download, and 1024GB/month cap. We don't ever come anywhere close to hitting that cap so that doesn't bother me. The speeds are fine. We watch some online videos/movies but not a ton. I game some but not a lot. Teenage daughter uses a lot of data gaming, watching Youtube, Facebook, etc. But even with her doing that, last I checked we never used more than about one-third of that.

I just did the test a couple times and got 17-18 Mbps download speed, for which I pay $65/month from the cable company. (Wichita/cox)
We stream to 2 and sometimes 3 devices and seldom have glitches. I would always like to find cheaper service - Cox has repeatedly pissed me off over the years.

and it’s going to get worse with all these already huge companies being allowed to combine into bigger companies and fewer choices for us.

Same service as ChiefsCountry - 100Mps up and down for $50 a month. We do have the option for Gigabit service, but I don't have a need for speed.

I don’t really think it can be stopped. Look at other public utilities, regulation hasn’t stopped consolidation. Deregulation hasn’t stopped it either. It seems like an inevitable cycle. Once we are down to 1 or 2 players, it will be time to bust them up and start all over. IF the government has any interest, that is. I doubt they do.

I'm at 25mbps for $50/ month. Not the best deal, but considering our options before Total Highspeed put in fiber, I'm not complaining. I had Hughes net and paid $69/ month for similar speeds and a had a 20GB cap which ran out pretty quickly. After that, it was about 2mbps

I just moved to Ozark and Im paying $55 for 400 mbps, no data cap with Suddenlink. Im sure this is a new customer promotion though, after a year it'll likely skyrocket.

Alternately, you can have the America model of consolidated companies that aren't regulated and have some of the highest prices and worse speeds in the rich world. |
