I wanna go with Wanagho

I'm usually not knee jerkish to bench players getting singular opportunities, and I know he wasn't facing elite edge guys this game, but I noticed almost zero issues with protection from the right side of the line today when Wanagho was in.

Should we make the change permanent?

Well, he'll likely get the chance to prove it again this week.

Wylie will probably be out, so he'll get to start and likely go up against Khalil Mack this coming Sunday night.

Hopefully the Chiefs will be ready to give him some assistance if he needs it to keep our golden goose from getting crushed.

I mean, I hope he balls out and shuts down Mack, but I'll need to see it to believe it.

How good was he, I went through his snaps. In the spoiler tag below, I show my work.

Spoiler!

TL;DR:

He was almost completely protected by Reid's playcalls the entire game. The Chiefs rolled plays away from him, and when they didn't they gave him chips and help almost every play, and Mahomes was on a 2-second release count almost every time.

PTW got a few downs where he was left to his own devices, but it was against lumbering 3-4 DEs or DTs (he held his own against them, so there's that). He had a couple true 1-on-1 downs against Travon Walker. He held up Walker once, but another time got bullrushed badly. That's as small a sample size as you're going to get, but the point is: you don't want to leave him on an island all day against DEs that know how to use power well.

In the run game, he walled off Walker well for a run, and was otherwise just asked to downblock on DTs. There was an instance where the guy he was supposed to downblock (Folorunso Fatukasi) timed the snap well and sprang past PTW and notched a TFL.

It is unquestionable that he is quicker than Wylie. He executed a reach block late in the game and looked good the one time he climbed to the second level for a linebacker.

His biggest problem, really, is power. Walker not only has good speed but threatens with power and PTW struggled with that in the very small sample size that he had to. That's a problem a ton of tackles struggle with, and that's why Walker is so good. It's also why Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack are really good as well.

So I really don't know if PTW is the season's solution at RT. But I do think he can be the solution next week against the Chargers -- Bosa is on IR, so you only have one of those beasts to deal with; you aren't going to have to sculpt everything around him all game like the Chiefs did against the Jaguars. This would be a great opportunity to give him four more quarters, dial back the assistance like 30%, and see how well he fares. After that, we can see.

If he struggles, you'll have Niang in the wings with Wylie coming back at some point.
Useful reality check for me, thanks! Power was the criticism in the draft I think.

The question is, why are we paying him to play RT if that's not his position? Surely we could have found a better option. I'm not asking him to be Dave Hill, just don't get our QB killed.

I'm just guessing, but I think the plan was to give Wylie a chance to hold it down and see if Niang materializes. I think the plan for PTW was to have him develop into a reserve swing tackle, and it looks like his development is pretty solid, right?

Gotta ramp him up, see how he handles the island a few times against a premier Chargers front, and hopefully he keeps gelling with Smith and cleaning up technique.

If not, Wylie sure seems like he will be back before long, and Niang remains the X factor.

We're not paying him to play RT. We're paying him to be a backup G/T and that's exactly what he is. He's only playing because Niang got hurt.

I hear you, but why are we trotting him out there week after week at $2.5M (2022 money) when Remmers makes a little over $1.1M? Niang's injury came at the end of the 2021 season. Surely we could have found someone else. We did pick up Christian as a bit of insurance, so why didn't he get the call when Wylie went down? I've grown weary of "OTs" that really are Gs (kinnard, I'm looking at you, too.).

Good chance that Wanogho has been working exclusively as a RT with Christian working as an LT in case of injury...that and who knows what will happen after the year.
