A new school is opening in our area, should I be concerned??

My son is in the 3rd grade and goes to an academy school k-8th. This is his first year at the school and he has finally settled in and made friends, the first week was tough on him… they are now opening a new elementary school that should be open by next year a few blocks from my house. Will my son be forced to go to this new school? I’m devastated if this is the case as my son has already been in and out of 3 different schools through elementary due to us moving a lot. We finally just bought our home and settled down and now this happens. I told my son I would home school him before I’d have him go to his 4th school in 5 years, it’s just not healthy for a young kid to have to do that.

What are my options? Will by son be grandfathered in at his current school?

Regarding the school, a few things. First, practically speaking, how far is the school now? Will the other kids in the neighborhood be in the same position? If so, friends from his school nearby your house is a good thing. Regardless if other kids in your neighborhood will get moved or not, it won’t be bad for your kid to go to a school with kids from the neighborhood.

Secondly, it sounds like a certainty you are making the anxiety your kid has with school much worst than it needs to be. You are communicating to him that changing schools is such a stressful and scary thing that you will do something as dramatic as taking him out of school before making him go back to one. What’s he supposed to think other than going to a new school might just be the worst thing ever? Seems pretty clear that his response will be excessive anxiety and stress about school.
This is a good point about other kids moving. Maybe his friends are all being assigned to the new school as well. Have you contacted the parents of his friends to see where they're headed? Maybe the new school is going to have a lot of the same kids as the old school, or maybe it'll be half being reassigned and half not being reassigned, so it'll be a wash and he'll get to enjoy that new school smell at a closer school.

Random story: when I was in third grade I went to a school that I really enjoyed and I had lots of friends. I was supposed to go to the same school in fourth grade, which would have been my first time to be in the same school for two grades, but the school district slightly tweaked the zone boundaries by a couple of blocks. I ended up being assigned to a different school as the only kid from my group, while all my friends remained at the old school.

Whatever, it didn't matter. I was more accustomed to moving than staying anyway. So I went to the new school, and I wasn't a fan. The old school had a grass lawn and we played football at recess. The new school was all concrete and tetherball was the main game. The rest of the school stuff was similar, but man, I hated losing football at recess.

I went there for a couple of months, and then something happened. My parents were renting their house and it was sold, so they had to move. My parents decided that it was time to buy a house, and they bought one that was only a few blocks away. (It was a small town.) But those few blocks moved me out of the new school and back into my old one.

I showed up to register and was standing at the admin desk when a kid appeared in the door of a classroom directly opposite me. It was one of my friends. The pencil sharpener was right at the door so he stood there long enough to notice me. We exchanged grins and the cloned spiderman pointing thing. Over the next five minutes every one of my friends went up to sharpen their pencil and wave as word spread of my return, and it was like old times. I got assigned to that class and the gang was together again. It's actually a very fond childhood memory of mine because I knew I really belonged.

Epilogue: we moved again at the end of the year and I never saw them again.

Solid story, I had to change schools alot during my youth years as well. My sons definitely not like me when it comes to change lol. Good read though.

Ask them to keep him at that school to help with his mental health.

I didn't read all the posts so I don't know if this has been mentioned but I thought I would add that it's more than likely that if it affects your child, it'll probably affect his friends too.

Point is that even if forced to change, his friends will probably be forced to do the same thing. So more than likely he'll have friends at the new school too.

If this is a repost, kindly let me know so I can drink the AIDS sauce or antifreeze or whatever the hell reposters drink these days.

I would think-if you are at a charter/academy school for the district, you should be able to stay. They usually protect those people to keep the school open. The only thing would be moving that program into the new building.

You should be able to find out all of that info from the district. If they have not published it, you need to call.

FWIW, several responses in this thread sound far more reasonable than the OP of "I'm devastated" and having already told your kid you'll home school him (which IMO sounds worse than going to a different school), especially if you aren't committed to doing so.

If you want less emotional responses, the obvious solution is to be (or come off) less emotional.
