[Florio speculates about] Raiders and Ben Johnson as HC

AFC West has to be the division with the best coaches, right? Andy, Harbaugh, Payton, and now potentially a gifted player caller in Ben Johnson...

Quote:
There’s currently no other destination that fits. Johnson has interviewed with the Raiders, Bears, Jaguars, and Patriots. The alignment he wants doesn’t exist in Jacksonville, and likely isn’t in play with the Bears. Unless the Cowboys (who blew their window to interview Johnson at any time before the Lions’ season ends because they didn’t interview him via Zoom last week) make a late run, it’s the Raiders or the status quo for Johnson.

More and more people in league circles believe it will be the Raiders.

Great hire. AFC West has the best coaches and despite that the Chiefs keep winning. Unlike the Patriots who's conference run ended when the division finally hired a good coach (McDermott)

It doesn't make any sense. He didn't take a job with a team last year, because he was waiting for the right situation, so he's going to go to the worst franchise possible? A franchise that has 4 different head coaches in the last 6 years. Florio is a ****ing tard.

It would seem antithetical to go to the Raiders only because Brady is a part owner and you have no established QB on the roster nor an easy and clear path to getting one.

He deserves and can achieve more than the Raiders. I don't buy it.
I'd pick Washington over the dumpster fire that is the LA Raiders. Washington had the #2 overall pick in one of the best drafts ever for a QB and had a brand new ownership group that seems to care about the team. The Raiders have the same old dipshit family running the show and the 6th pick in a shit QB draft.

Josh McDaniels snubbed the Colts (when they still had Andrew Luck) all so he could take the Raiders job a few years later.

Sometimes coaches are dumb. Really dumb.

Other than the turnip (Mark Davis), there’s much to consider for Vegas. Lots of draft picks, pick of GM?, arguably the best facilities in the NFL, some pieces in place on both sides of the ball, tax friendly state and seemingly a great deal of freedom to do your thing. Again I’m assuming Davis has handed over the reigns for the most part to Brady and stepping back.

I’d bet a years salary that if Mark Davis name showed on the caller ID, Ben Johnson, Pete Carroll or any of these names would not have answered the phone. This is the Brady affect

It’s about control. The Commanders made him leery bc their owners are snobby basketball guys. The Bears, Patriots and Jags want him to work with their GM.

He wants control. His own guys, ownership and things to be his way. He gets that in LV. Davis will pay for the checks and Tom Brady got the GM fired so he can convice the guy to come in and remake the whole damn thing the way he wants to.

That's idiotic on Johnson's part.

If you're a head coach, maybe you say, "Hey, I work well with this guy I know. You should make him the GM." But for the love of God, how many times does the head coach with GM powers experiment have to be an epic fail before the entire league learns not to trust that model?

I don't care if you've got good scouting chops. You're bound to be in the conversation when the offseason plan gets rolling, so just serve that expected part like Andy does and then leave shit the hell alone and just coach.

I don’t think it’s about picking a GM you control rather than a GM that shares your vision. I think there’s a difference. Nobody has been hired yet but it will be interesting to see what plays out

I wasn't surprised AP was fired but when Telesco was fired a day or two later, that got my attention that somebody else is running the show with a full blown clean slate. The quality of coaches and GMs being interviewed or scheduled to be interviewed right now are of the quality that I haven't seen associated with the Raiders in decades.

Will things improve? Who knows? But there is a different vibe right now that this is different from previous off seasons.
Mark hasn't had an epiphany. He is doing the same thing with Brady as he did with Gruden by letting his newest crush control the operations.

Hopefully, Brady is more Jerry West than Michael Jordan.
