On my way home

So today on my way home, i turn onto my street like any other normal day. One thing i've noticed over the last couple years is the dynamic of my neighborhood is changing a little bit. As i turn onto the street, i see a pickup truck stopped in the middle of the road (one way street with parking on both sides). As i stop about 10 feet behind the truck i notice a commotion to the right and see two pit bulls locked in a battle. A couple kids are kicking at the dogs trying to break them up. A couple are rushing around on the phone trying to call the police and animal control. I see someone approach the dogs with some kind of stick and start wailing on them a few times.

Nothing is phasing the dogs of course and i also notice a couple people just casually lounging on the step to the right of the ruckus. I didn't really think of it till now, but everyone involved up to this point is female. No guys around.

All this happened really quick, yet it seemed to go on for a long time. I'm watching the dogs and wincing a bit because i'm waiting for one of them to rip the other apart because they seem to have each other, at least partially, by the mouth.

Just then, to my left, i notice an older white man walk by my car with a gun in his hand. I don't recognize him but i'm thinking that he lives near there because he seems to be agitated and if you don't live there, why would you care that much?

Just to back track a little bit, i have a CCW and i had momentarily considered intervening but the entire time, it was only the dogs focused on each other. No other people were in danger. So this guy walks over to the dogs and by this time they had worked their way around the side of the truck, just out of my sight. The guy walks up, leans in, and then i hear two shots. I didn't see the dogs get hit, but they both limped away in opposite directions.

At that point, all the kids start freaking out but the adults still seem very calm. One lady up on the porch to the right even says to the guy, "thank you. i appreciate that". As the guy turns and walks back to where he came from, he says out loud, "i'm not afraid of any of you all".

Right after that, someone moves the truck blocking the street and i proceed on home, go in the house and tell my wife, don't ever ever ever let our dog out in the front without being out there with her, or better yet, don't ever let her out unless it's me taking her out. I tell her and my son the story and hear the sirens, so i walk back down there and give the police my statement.

So, how was your day, honey?

I hear ya. Our old neighborhood was decent, had lots of families, etc. when my kids were growing up. Last several years that we lived there, some of the houses became rentals. One across the street became some kind of group home for young women in trouble.

Once, we were coming home from a short ride and the street to my garage was blocked by a cop. He seemed agitated that I would even ask WTF was going on. I told him that my house was right down the street and that my daughter (maybe 13 at the time) was home by herself. Cop still would not let me pass. I gotta say that I did consider just riding past him but thought better of it. We went around and made it to our house. Then the cops were walking around everywhere looking for this guy. I told my daughter to not let our dogs outside as I didn't want some gung ho cop shooting them.

As it turned out, they were looking for a guy that had just been involved in a shootout with the FBI and other law enforcement at a seedy motel south of town. Errr....wait....maybe that was after. In any case, this guy had been living directly across the street from me for months. Had no idea such a thug was there. Kinda scary to think about. He never really talked to anyone so I guess that's good.

I'm so glad we moved out of the city 5.5 years ago.

Rentals are the big problem. The house right next to me was a rental for a long time and we had some real doozies. One family from down the holler with 8 cars and every one of them leaked oil...

A nice Mexican family bought that house about 10 years ago, so i'm insulated by several houses on all sides with good neighbors. It's just that area at the beginning of the street.

I've never understood why poor people like pit bulls so much. They absolutely love them.

If I'm traveling and Air BnB'ing it or have to run through a lower socioeconomic neighborhood I am always worried one of those sons of bitches is going to come after me...because one time one of them did and the owner was able to get it in time luckily but sometimes there are random unleashed dogs just roaming around in these neighborhoods.

My kid got bit by our neighbors dog last year. He still has the compression mark in his leg. As I've grown older and more grumpy, I begun to dislike animals in general. Too many irresponsible people with pets.

Also why did the guy declare that he wasn't afraid of anyone?

I knew a guy from Cincy. He used to call it 'the nasty'.

Urban Dictionary agrees: cincinnasty (we) call it that for its violent nature, not because it smells(pollution is bad due to the fact that the city is inside the ohio valley). No one calls it cincinnasti either, its usually just referred to as the nasty or the nasty nati

This story (like every other true story in existence) did not end with the Bengals winning the Super Bowl.

I'm curious about the desire for that breed as well. If you love dogs, great. And if you happen to come across one that's lovable and you're in a position to keep it under control, go for it. But I don't think that's how most people end up with them.

I think a strong majority of pit owners fall into two main groups:

1. People who see the breed being "discriminated against", so they get one to thumb their nose at authority without really thinking about what it means to own one. They snuggle their dogs.

2. People who want to look tough, and they think that having a pit bull accomplishes that. They want their dogs to look aggressive.
