Executives crying foul over Emmanuel Sanders deal

Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos tomorrow, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Bucs, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collecting a fee from a client prematurely. Weinberg later filed suit against the NFLPA and its top officials, alleging they illegally took away his certification for eight years, along with past, present and future income of clients.

Weinberg has two clients currently on NFL teams, not including Sanders. He had 42 before he was barred.

While Weinberg broke no laws in accepting a deal, the entire situation infuriated those he dealt with. It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal -- in writing or in handshake form -- that's the end of the story. Instead, by Weinberg shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that a deal had been reached showed another side of the business. It is unclear if the Broncos were aware of the previous actions.

"When a man gives you his words and pulls out," one executive said, "then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper."

It's never a good idea to have only space eaters as your starters on your DL. Teams that follow that mold in this passing league are only asking to have nothing more than a mediocre to average defense. Last year, the only legitimate pass rushing force on our DL was Poe.

Bailey, who was supposed to be our key interior pass rusher next to Poe, uses little to no technique and is always last off the snap so he could be neutralized fairly easily in 1 on 1 situations by any decent OG.

Jackson and Devito were just big bodies who could hold the POA and provided little pressure.

Catapano was a 7th round pick out of Princeton who got few reps due to his rawness and the fact that he only weighed 270 pounds. He flashed some good pass rush ability with decent hand placement, a burst that was on par with Houston and Hali, and more power than he is given credit for. He was a pleasant surprise to me as I didn't even expect him to make the roster much less play in any actual games for us. He showed more promise than Bailey has, IMO. Only had something like 91 snaps the entire season.

Powe only showed his bull rush and little else; any guard who can anchor well could neutralize him 1 on 1.

Our interior pass rush is going to be much improved over last season with the signing of Walker, the further development of Catapano, even more improvement from Poe, and likely a new draft pick. I'm not expecting too much from Bailey next season, nor am I expecting Powe to get very many snaps because the coaching staff doesn't seem to trust him.

We've improved our front 7 with just 1 signing, that's awesome. Now let's go draft someone to groom behind Hali.

Problem is that run stopping is lower than whale crap on the ocean floor list of defensive problems to solve these days.

Give that back 4+ per carry, much better than giving that receiver 15+... its a passing league now and no one can deny it, "run stuffers" have become passé... 0.5 QB pressures per game, we can do do better than that for Jacksons coin.

Don't feel sorry for T though, Pioli has him covered in a face saving, outdated mode of thought down south.

Not trolling... I see him as a third receiver. How much should a slot receiver get paid? Is he the best slot receiver in the league? I guess he's in the argument but, I can't give a slot receiver a five year deal. Not because I don't want to spend every penny except for a few dollars reserved to replace injuries, because I want to make the most of our money. A receiver who hasn't had a 1,000 yard season isn't worth a five year deal imo. I like Sanders but he hasn't earned that.
