Peyton Manning is a game manager in the most literal sense.
He manages the game. But "Game manager" is just analyst speak for avg Quarterback. Which he most certainly is not.

Manning is in total control of the offense, he may be the eptimum of a game manager. Or offensive CEO. However you want to put it. Manning is a ****ing master of taking what the defense gives him, every single down. Thats management. Just a vastly different kind. |

Game manager is a term used for a QB that isn't going to go out and create offense. A game manager is a QB that relies on his defense to keep him in the game. A game manager is not the key to his teams success.
If you think that's Manning you can go ahead and off yourself. |

Thats Manning, its just that he is way way better at it than most. Why do you think he audibles to runs all the time when the numbers dictate. Is that not managing the offense?Taking the smart move? |

It started that way.
Pundits used to use the term "game manager" for a QB who was very limited and failed when asked to do to much or perform at a high level. It was a QB who coaches limited to "slow and steady" who would get rattled or throw picks or blow it in clutch situations or big games or if you asked too much from him. He wasn't going to engineer 4th quarter drives and he wasn't going to win from behind or throw 400 yards passing in a shootout. The poster boy was Trent Dilfer. As time went on, some of the guys these pundits labelled "game manager" started playing pretty well. To save face, the pundits started pretending they meant it as "a guy who can manage the huddle and the play". Still never pertained to a top QB. It started as an insult and now I'm not sure what it means aside from a mediocre QB who isn't top tier. Nobody calls Rodgers or Brady or Manning a "game manager". The call them elite or great or what-have-you. You don't hear "game manager" as an insult much these days. But it started as a cut down for a QB who you couldn't lean on too hard and couldn't expect to actively help your team.

I never once heard Troy Aikman called a "game manager" in any broadcast in any single one of his games. Never once. As a Niner fan, I saw a lot of Cowboys games in that era. Nobody ever called Aikman a game manager.

Game managing is what every QB does. That is the foundation of QB.
On less talented Colts teams Peyton Manning was not given the credit he deserved at times because he had to do more smart managing to secure victories. O-Line wasn't good. Running wasn't good. No explosive play WR or TE. Defense was very bend but not break. |

If you want to look at the term in a vacuum in the most literal sense, obviously every Quarterback manages the game to some extent.
But that's not what the term means in pretty much every conventional football sense. We all know who the term applies to and what are the levels above and below that.
