Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

If there are, it’s the few.

I don’t know how much Alex smith helped him but I’m sure he did, the level of “help” is what I guess you could argue or debate on.

I’ve always said this and will say it again, I’m thankful for Alex smith because without him, we don’t have machines and we don’t have 3 Super Bowls to our name in the recent years.

It's not few at all. Way too many believe this "Alex taught Mahomes how to be a professional" bullshit. Why is Alex responsible for the 3 Super Bowls? That makes no sense.

Alex was a net positive on Mahomes, so for that we can thank him and move on.

He's like the worst uncle you had growing up, where you had to visit him and you never got to do anything fun at his house. But when he died he gave you like $10k so he was cool after all.

Who is saying this? I don’t see really anyone saying this at all. We had the Alex homers back then but that’s been long dead…

He also has no part in the superbowl wins, I’ve also not seen anyone say that either….

I know more about Alex’s rookie season and subsequent seasons than I’d like, but from what I can tell and what I’ve read back during the brief smith/mahomes days, Alex didn’t like the way he was treated when he entered the league, (mind you guy couldn’t even legally drink when he joined the NFL) and he tried his best to mentor Patrick knowing his time was coming to an end. I think there’s even a clip of him mentioning how he knew his time was limited and was playing for both the team and his contract to join a new team, which obviously became the redskins..

Dude took us from a 2-14 team to an immediate playoff contender the following year and we get Mahomes out of it, I can’t complain.

Alex Smith’s best contribution was ensuring that Andy Reid stayed coach long enough to draft Mahomes.

If we reach for one of the QBs in that draft at 1/1, it might’ve been a complete disaster.

Who knows how that shakes out? Maybe Reid is taking another QB by 2015 or so?

Mahomes likely doesn’t make it to KC if that happens. If that second QB is also a disaster, Andy might be out of KC right now.

Unanswerable question: How does Geno Smith turn out if he plays his whole career with Reid?

Feels like he's had a better career than 90% of the QBs taken in the first round since he was drafted.

Geno was a late bloomer like Vinnie Testaverde.

Two realistic possibilities that I hate:

1. Good enough to keep us from drafting a QB in 2017
2. Bad enough to get Reid fired (or drafting another QB before 2017)
