****Official Golf Thread****

The original Bushwood thread is overflowing like Craig Stadler's FUPA.

Use this thread to discuss tournaments, swing thoughts, equipment, and golf deals.

I thought we could also use the OP to create a WITB for ChiefsPlanet members. I'll list a poster's name and put their sticks in a spoiler tag, so you can see what everyone is carrying.

Sonders is 28 and looks like she's 38. She's utterly worthless on the broadcasts, too. Just pushes the damned "play" button on the TV. She's hot, but she's completely manufactured. I'd rather they just put a porn star in her place, because at least there wouldn't be any pretense as to why she got the job.

If you want to look at attractive women, there are far more attractive ones wearing far less, available for free online.

That aside...

This course is shit. This is a bastardized links course. You can't have severe elevations with links setups, because it takes away your ability to run the ball to the putting surface. This is a course that you can't play in the air and can't play along the ground.

Top that off with the worst putting surfaces they've played on all year (by far--literally, those are bad-muni quality greens) and no amount of fluffing by the USGA is going to make that course look any better.

For all the controversy about World Cup bids, I'd like to know what the hell Chambers Bay did to get the two biggest USGA Championships in its first eight years when it lacks adequate grounds to house spectators, doesn't have the climate for fair greens, and lacks suitable lodging.

They have to paint dots on the ****ing surface so that players know where the greens are. That's just an embarrassment.

Please, just keep the US Open at mature, parkland courses. The British Open is links golf, Augusta is Augusta, and the PGA is a rotating band of the second tier courses; the USGA should stick to the best parkland courses in the US.

And Davis, please, enough with the ****ing run-offs around greens and the wispy ass rough that is all about good luck. Restore the deeper rough that truly penalizes a wayward drive (forcing a wedge out) and approaches into the greens.

Here's the other thing: The British Open is the tournament that is known for needing the luck of the draw with weather, and that is by far the worst part of it. Adding that element to a course is horrendous as well.

people are really mad that the pros hate the course? Hell. I wish the winner would finish at +10. It's fun to see amazing golfers struggle.

Agreed...the green is like something off a mini putt course.

I agree that the US Open should be brutal, but there are sensible ways to execute that brutality.

I know you are new-ish to golf, but if you want a good example of what a US Open course should look and play like, find some clips of the 2006 Open at Winged Foot or '07 at Oakmont.

If you missed the fairways on those courses, you were getting punished. The greens were extremely firm, and they had undulations, but you didn't have to play shots that would land fifty feet past the pin and hope they caught a backstop to play them back towards the pin. Those courses could be played two ways: strong players could bomb away with a driver and use their strength to try and hack out of the deep rough, and precise players could play from the fairway and have reasonable shots to the middle of the green that would leave difficult, fast, but fair, birdie putts.

This course has two problems: One, the greens are too undulating for the nature of the course, so too much luck is required to stop the ball on these surfaces. But the main issue is that the greens are just dogshit. If you're sitting over a four foot putt, some of them are almost unmakeable because of the poa, which can shoot the ball anywhere. Meanwhile, if someone doesn't have poa in their line, it's a pretty straight four foot putt.

This course would be a lot better if the rough was much thicker and the greens were something like paspalum.

Here's an article about a tour pro playing a muni. A lot of the stuff he complains about is happening on these greens, with poa seed heads replacing sand:
