Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

They have well over 80 million in cap room too so OBJ's high price tag won't mean much. When you add in Poles formerly working here, I agree and think that Chicago makes the most sense-even more so if they trade out of the #1 spot and can get more picks.

We'll get at least a 2nd and probably more. It's all just a question of how Veach values Paris Johnson/Harrison/whoever as opposed to OBJ and their potential to be a top 3 LT in our offense.
It's all about the cap, we bit the bullet on Tyreek last year (just couldn't fit what he wanted in the mix, now OBjr want's a top of the market deal and all the others in line. I just have to think the tag/draft approach fits into the cap better.

Reports are that Houston might try and trade up with the Bears to make sure no one else does and get thier QB.

If true I don't see Houston giving up BOTH #2+#12 as that would be serious overpay.

What about trading Tunsil to us for #31 and then Houston packages #2+#31 to the Bears. We could then trade OBJ for a 2nd to a team.

So the Texans plan is to trade away their LT.......so they can draft a rookie QB? In what world does that make sense?

Why would they give up the guy who is going to protect their rookie QB?

If the Texans are stupid enough to trade with the Bears then they could be stupid enough to trade Tunsil. Trading up would be Bears trading up for Trubisky stupid. No QB in this draft is worth the picks a team would need to give up to jump to #1.

The Texans should refuse to do that on principle alone.

Why would we trade more picks for yet another LT that we have to overpay.

That makes no damn sense.

On that I agree. The whole point of trading OBJ is to find a cheap, younger replacement in the draft. You then can take that savings and use it extend Jones, Snead and maybe grab a FA at a different spot. Or trade for someone at a different spot.

You don't trade him to sign another LT.....not that this matters as the Texans would never do that anyway.

You’ve got it all wrong.

Thuney
Creed
Kelce
Smith
OBJ

That’s your offensive line next year.
