I drive for lyft/uber

So the last few months I have been drving for lyft and uber and last night I was given a quest to do 25 rides get 250.00 and 80 ridcs get 181.00 plus 70.00 for 15 more rides after the 80.

I started driving last night at 5 pm and went to 2am. In that time I made over 550.00 in one night and over 1100.00 for the week with less than 36 hours driving. I completed he 80 ride quest and I am 13 rides from completing the 25 ride quest and 12 rides from completing the 15 ride quest for the extra 70.00.

When I go out tonight I should be able to come close to what I made last night again.

This is allowing me to install new HiD/LED headlights on my car and installing car play stereo system as well.
The math comes out to around 32.00 an hour for last night.

I’ve done DD too and I make around $25 an hour. I’d say $20 an hour is pretty accurate when you deduct the expenses. Also, track the mileage for taxes.

I drove Uber for three years in Houston and quit driving in April. I live in the Houston area, and after getting in a minor accident while driving Uber, my insurance rates skyrocketed because I had to raise my liability limits and get a Rideshare endorsement (my insurance company didn't know I was driving, and it wasn't clear that I needed to tell them because Uber touts the fact that it insures you while driving). The other reason I quit is that gas/maintenance/and misc. expenses were really eating into my income from driving, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I began to look more closely at how much my passengers were paying Uber, and what my cut actually was. I had one trip where my passenger paid Uber around $75 and I got paid only $32...and there were multiple cases where Uber was taking anywhere between 25% and 50% of the fares (it was wildly inconsistent but the average was between 40% and 45%).

On the plus side, I had a few cool passengers including former Chiefs backup QB Pete Beathard, Texans OL Max Sharping, and while I can't remember his name, he'd been Neil Armstrong's commander in the Navy during the Korean War.

This is pretty much true, and accurate of my own experience driving for three years with them. Thanks to a raise at my f/t job, I was able to quit (that and I started looking closer at how much passengers were paying Uber vs. what Uber was paying me). It can be an OK side hustle, but making a "real" profit doesn't happen because of the expenses that most drivers don't take into account that eats up your earnings.

I traded in a Nissan Quest a few years before I should have had to trade it in (because I ran up the mileage driving Uber), and got almost nothing for it. I bought a brand new car and drove that for less than a year (because of Covid, and because of quitting driving) and it's value is so much less than it should be because it has more miles on it than it should for the age of the car.

It's not a big deal. Some of us never saw this thread the first time it was made.

I was in Dallas this past weekend for a bachelor party. We took Lyft's pretty much everywhere and holy shit, IDK if it is Dallas or what, but every single one was a ****ing nightmare.

One guy was going anywhere from 90-120 showing us "all the best spots in Dallas." A ride that was supposed to take 20-25 minutes, took an hour and a half. The next morning my friend noticed that Lyft was sending him notifications asking him if we were okay because we "appeared to not be headed towards our destination."

Another driver was trying to pick up hookers on the way back from dinner. He said he wanted us to see how easy it was and how cheap they are...

Another one just refused to really speak with us other than yes or no responses, and was driving like he just learned. Getting on the highway doing 30 miles an hour and shit.

Like I said, I don't know if that is just Dallas in general or if we were just unlucky with our drivers, but jesus christ it was an adventure each time.

The thing that stands out to me the most as something people don't consider is when he talks about how spending that much time on the road increases chances of something bad happening. Getting into an accident where you're at fault is something that can continue to haunt you even if you stopped driving for them. The icing on the cake is at the end where he explains how Uber is basically using today's drivers as a way to finance their development of autonomous vehicles. That alone should keep people from wanting to work for them.
