I don't understand today's young people

Help me out, youth generation (and aging hipsters like Jim and Skip):

Why, in so many pictures of people under 30, do folks flash the "two-finger" sign? Either the index and middle finger together, or the index and pinkie?

What does that symbolize or refer to?

To me, it's a cliche. So are these folks making an ironic statement in flashing it? Or do they really believe they're being cool?

Forgive me, for I am 40 and I sometimes feel like I'm 60.

I feel ya bro (old redneck trying to be hip on the internet) this reminds me of something that happened a few years back. I kept seeing 420 shirts and bumper stickers. I saw one with my kids in the truck and asked do you guys know what the heck that means?

They both laughed and told me it is the international time to smoke pot. I didnt really get it and still dont. While on my way to work sometime later I saw a sticker that read "it is 419 anyone got a minute?" I laughed and felt hip because I got the joke.

You'd be correct. At one time it was sort of a controversial thing because it was equated with the Devil's Horns. Now, it's just a general "ROCK ON!" thing. On the few occasions I find myself doing it, it's usually done mockingly.

This one is like the Longhorns symbol, only it's more of "bullshit".

Back in my day we would actually say (using spoken words) "what's up?' or "How you doin" because scientists hadn't yet developed symbols for those words. Usually, though, we'd just nod or grunt. This was way back in the early 70's, even before the peace sign looked like the Mercedes symbol.

Huh. I've been a Lovecraft fan for many years and never would have made that association. Interesting.

I support going back in time and murdering the guys who co-opted the devil horns for general rock purposes. What was once a tool to recognize the Dark Lord while listening to blasphemic Heavy Metal music is now just a sign for acknowledging one's rocktitude. Disgusting.
