One of the things I personally struggle with the most when it comes to moderation around here is the issue of racial slurs. Racial slurs range from the obvious (e.g., the "n" word) to the relatively innocuous (e.g., "cracker"). It's tough to tell where to draw the line.

So, here's a poll to help me better understand how people feel. There are thousands of words that could be construed as racial slurs out there, so this won't be a comprehensive list. But it'll cover most of the common ones that seem to crop up here and there.

I'll also mention that this poll has nothing to do with what appropriate action there might be for people using them. There will always be a lot of room for interpretation. The poll is merely to help me understand the range of feelings about the topic.

Why censor any word? With the functionality of the ignore features available, people can 'ignore' any poster, any thread or any words that they want to. If BobbyBadBoy wants to drop insulting words, SuzieStraightLace can use the ignore function to solve that problem without limiting the ability of everyone else to read everything they choose. And that should go for any "N" word, "S" word, "B" word or other "Letter" word.

Just my opinion.

Heh...I didn't even realize that the first option (b-e-a-n-e-r) was being filtered in the normal view of the Planet. I was wondering why that got so few votes!

I think racial slurs are hilarious, but only on the internet. However, I realize a lot of people are going to be offended reading them. A LOT. A far greater demographic than might be offended by fat jokes or religious jokes. So I'm in favor of not using any of the above. I think it chases away too many people.
