One of my kids has worked for UPS for a few years. He drives an 18-wheeler locally and was hired on in that capacity. All he had was his CDL and had some experience working for a smaller shipping company.

Maybe your friends experience is more typical but it doesn't always work that way.

Good luck mcan. I have several friends involved in theatre locally and a couple make a few bucks but even those still work another job for the most part.

Sometimes going to a technical school for awhile can give you a foundation for a career change but as others have suggested, look to something that you enjoy if that's possible.

If you don't mind big time risk and being in a desert for awhile, I hear doing contract work in Iraq is huge pull cash wise.

It is, but you generally have to be qualified at something...

If you were in KC, I'd hire you and train you so you'd NEVER be without a job again! I haven't been worried about unemployment for 21 years! Pay varies some but I do fairly okay.

A friend of mine was just hired as a pharmaceutical rep. All he had was a degree and some sales experience - nothing medical related.

Or, you could get certified to teach pretty quickly.

I'm curious as to the number of times/people who mentioned during your decision making about college or degree selection that it may not be a highly valuable degree?

There are a number of college degrees that should come with a disclaimer of low probability of usefulness in the real world.

What I heard over and over again is that as long as it's not a "specialized" field like doctor, lawyer, architect, engineer, etc... that your major isn't particularly important. Most careers are based on a skill set which is personality based, and/or developed through on the job training, and just HAVING a degree proves that you can finish what you start, are an educated person, and can learn how to be successful if put in a position to do so.

Unfortunately, it has been my recent experience that when hundreds of people are applying for only a handful of available jobs, those with the degrees that are closest to "applicable" to a particular field have a leg up. It still boggles my mind to hear stories of the "idiots" that everybody works with that have a great job while I sit at home and throw resumes at websites. My girlfriend (who edits pre-licensing materials for insurance exam study guides) was recently asked by one of her coworkers "what's 30 + 15?" Later, someone asked this same woman if it was snowing outside yet and she replied "no, not yet... It's only precipitating." My guess is, she probably has a more applicable major than theater.
