i had an issue with a brand new ak misfeeding on cheap commie ammo, but after some heat cycles and a few hundred rounds, you couldn't make it jam if you wanted to.

Ruger M77 Mark II 30-06 Sprg.
In my opinion the perfect rifle. You can fine tune it to the game that you are hunting by shooting different loads and it's pretty damn accurate. I have killed whitetails, a black bear, a muley, an antelope, and plan to take it elk hunting next fall in Wyoming. Wouldn't want for anything else.

One rifle to stay alive? I'd probably take my Ruger .22 simply cause even with balistic tips, the ammo is so damn cheap and easy to carry that I would (and do) have thousands of rounds. I also have a Ruger .270 that I really like as well. Great bolt action. I'd use it if I had to pick dudes off at 4oo yards but still rather have a solid .22 otherwise.

I'm surprised I'm the first to mention the FN FAL.
It's shooting the same 7.62 NATO round as the M-14 and M-60 so the accuracy, range and power are fantastic but with a composite stock that's much lighter than either of those two. Been used in a dozens of conflicts in various climate and maintains a strong reputation for reliability. A bit big for varmint hunting but fine for game the size of deer up to just below the size of an elephant, in other words plenty of rifle for anything we'd realistically run into in North America. The video MoHillbilly is showing is from the Military Channels "Top 10 Assault Rifles". The BAR came in 10th, the FN FAL came in around 4th, maybe 3rd, with the AK-47 being the best. An interesting factoid from that show, an adviser that worked with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan during the Russian invasion said that their cleaning of the AK consisted of pulling the bolt back and running a piece of rope that had been soaked in engine oil through the barrel. That's it. They are literally so reliable that cleaning is almost unnecessary.

I have heard of that problem with SKS's but they have an open top bolt that can allow rain and snow to seep in and freeze causing a jam. My understanding is that because the AK-47 uses a side discharge bolt that the freezing issue is reduced. Guess that doesn't mean eliminated though does it?

If I had to choose from my own personal collection, I could live with my 1953 Russian SKS that I just bought a few days ago. I think I had more fun shooting that than my AR-15. The SKS is rugged, accurate enough, holds 10 shots, and has a bayonet for any close encounters. All I need is a boat load of ammo and some stipper clips to go with it.
honorable mentions: AK-47 AR-15 Marlin or Winchester 30-30 lever action rifle my Winchester 9422 lever action rifle any bolt action hunting rifle in 30-06 or .308 with some nice glass |

what the heck was that little .22 that came out in the late 70s early 80s? came apart and packed away in the buttstock. Do they still make these? thoughts on em.

IIRC, with everything packed in the stock it will also float in water.

One guy lost the flash suppressor after the very first shot with it and said it looked like it was only held on by something like JB Weld to begin with.

I had an AR15 that I assembled from a parts kit it was a pretty decent little rifle despite the fact I had to substitute a spring from an ink pen for one that was missing from the kit.

I had the Colt Match HBAR AR-15. Never had a lick of trouble with it. But, I never really abused it like someone at war would. I must've killed me 500 milk jugs with the thing! They didn't stand a chance!
