As for the goosebumps Roger got: I think you probably have to have some cultural understanding and appreciate of stepping in order to be affected by it. I love to watch stepping, and it goes way back with me. My grandmother was a dorm mother at University of Central Arkansas. We spent a lot of time up there throughout the school year and summers. In the summer, UCA would host a huge regional step show where tons of people would come to compete against each other. It was so cool, because they would just be spread out all over campus, little groups having random battles and stepping and such. Was a meat experience for a white kid from the South.

WTF!?!

They should have just let that shit ride. This not a good look at all.

http://www.accessatlanta.com/atlanta...ts-329103.html

Five days after taking first place in the Sprite Step Off finals in Atlanta this past weekend, the women of Zeta Tau Alpha's Epsilon Chapter from the University of Arkansas learned they would be sharing the spotlight.

The change was revealed in a short Facebook statement linked from the Sprite Step-Off homepage but the statement did not offer insight into the exact problem with the scoring or how it was discovered. Coke representatives said this afternoon they were working to provide additional information.

The announcement comes after four days of blog posts and YouTube comments alternating between support for Zeta Tau Alpha's win and those doubting the competition results. At the heart of the debate is race.

Zeta Tau Alpha is a predominantly white organization which took first place in a tradition that has historically been dominated by African-American fraternities and sororities. Their winning routine, an eight minute Matrix themed production, got more than 200,000 views on YouTube, more than twice as many as the second or third place winners.

Anthony Antoine, 40, of Atlanta, who posted the popular YouTube video was shocked when he received more than 1,000 email comments on his post. The tone, he said, was overwhelming negative. "‘The bottomline was they didn't care if the girls were better or not, the people that were upset were saying white girls should not have won period. I think this is bigger than a step competition, race relations in America still needs a lot of work,” he said.

Ironically, it was an attempt to foster better race relations that first brought Zeta Tau Alpha into the fold of stepping. The chapter at the University of Arkansas began participating 16 years ago in a Unity step show sponsored by the campus chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., an African American sorority.

The Zeta Tau Alpha women won the Sprite Step Off qualifying competition in October, and the regional championship held in Houston in January which earned them a place in the finals.

In a statement, national representatives for Zeta Tau Alpha said, "We are proud of our nine-member team that earned a co-championship in the event finals held February 20, in Atlanta, Ga. They represented our Fraternity well and exhibited great sisterhood and dedication throughout their preparation over the past five months. Alpha Kappa Alpha and its Tau Chapter at Indiana University have a longstanding tradition of excellent stepping and we are pleased to share the title with their organization."

SPRITE STATEMENT:

The Sprite Step Off was initially created as a way to recognize talented college students and give out scholarships to help support their higher education. If we put on some entertaining step shows and brought people together along the way, all the better.

After the National Finals Competition this past weekend in Atlanta wrapped, we got together to do our post-competition review and found a scoring discrepancy in the sorority results. After looking at it and looking at it AGAIN, we determined there isn’t a definitive resolution.

Sprite is all about preserving the honesty and integrity of this competition. Because the scoring discrepancy can’t be resolved and due to the really tight margin between the first and second place sorors, we feel that the only right thing to do is to name both Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter & Zeta Tau Alpha, Epsilon Chapter, co-first place winners of the Sprite Step Off.

With these revised results, we’re gonna increase Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter’s scholarship prize to $100K, consistent with what Zeta Tau Alpha also got for their first prize winnings.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make The Sprite Step Off happen. And to one last stroll in the name of unity…

I wonder what the scoring discrepancy was. How do they score these things anyway?

We probably shouldn't assume that the discrepancy had to do with race. The comments on the youtube page may have contained that sentiment, but we don't know that that's what the "discrepancy" was about.

I think Sprite handled it as well as they could. I loved that last line they threw in their statement. My issue is all the people saying those white girls shouldn't have won because they're white.

Yeah, there's no excuse for that.
