NFL source: Chiefs facing "abyss"

http://www.kctv5.com/story/30243233/...s-facing-abyss

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As bad as the first five weeks have been for the Chiefs, it could get a lot worse.

That is the verdict of one long-time NFL executive.

"I don't have to be there to know how bad it is inside their offices and locker room," he said. "When you lose a game like Sunday's loss to the Bears, there's a real hangover."

That makes sense, KC blew a 17-3 lead against a poor Chicago team to fall to 1-4 on the season. Two of those losses came at home, and they were in games that the Chiefs seemed to have in hand. Offensive mistakes and poor defense fueled the defeats.

But, as bad as that is, it could lead to bigger problems.

"The concern for Andy is that the guys stop buying in," he told KCTV5. "If they stop listening to coaches, or start pointing fingers at each other, this could really get ugly."

The long-time exec has always been a big fan of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, but he said Reid is in a dangerous situation.

"I think the players respect Andy," he said, "But if the owner undermines him in any way, that could change. It could really implode."

Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt personally selected his head coach and general manager John Dorsey, so it would appear highly unlikely that he would do or say anything to put the leaders of his franchise in a bad light. Even when faced with firing former GMs Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli, Hunt did nothing in advance to put his GMs in a bad position.

The NFL executive told KCTV5 that he is also worried about the Chiefs quarterback.

"Alex Smith has been left 'naked,'" he said, "First, he had no offensive line and now he loses the main component of his running game. Good luck with that."

He said the loss of running back Jamaal Charles will make Reid's game-planning and play calling job a lot harder, and that an already weak Chiefs offense will have an even harder time moving forward.

He also said the problems extend to the defense.

"I think (Chiefs defensive coordinator) Bob Sutton's in trouble." he said. "I really like Bob, but that defense should be better."

The veteran exec has faced these kinds of issues himself, and he says he "feels for those guys." "I hope they get it fixed," he said.

So do the millions of Chiefs fans worldwide.

KC will play at Minnesota this Sunday. A game you can see right here on KCTV5. Kick off's at noon.

The Bears had the ball for over 33 minutes in that game. The Bears loss is entirely on Smith and his inability to throw the ball accurately and keep this defense off the field. How many passes did he completely ****ing miss on? How many 3rd down conversions did he **** up because he couldn't throw an accurate ball when he had a perfectly acceptable pocket around him? You could swap defenses with the Broncos unit and this team would be right where it's at because defenses get ****ing tired when they have to continually go up against an offense with no ****ing rest.

The offense going 3 and out on their last three drives certainly didn't help the D or run the clock to preserve the lead.

Peyton is a team leader. Alex Smith is an accessory to a good team. Big difference. We can fix everything around him. But even still, does anybody think Alex Smith can consistently win games where the defense and running game isn't carrying him? If not, then what are we building around? An improved defense does us no good when Alex has a disgustingly bad track record at third downs and 4th quarter play. A new ol does nothing if he doesn't read the Blitz and immediately looks for a check down. New receivers mean nothing I'd you take away any route more than 15 yards. And while Alex seems like a genuinely great guy, he doesn't show any emotion out there. He's too polite to take charge

I don't think Alex is the worst QB in the world. But he is a big piece to holding us back.

I still think it will be his downfall.. He tied himself to Smith with the two picks and huge contract...

Smith fails = Reid complete failure...

Yeah, that defense. If you're talented enough to do it early, you're talented enough to do it late, unless you're craven.

You're just a lazy fan who wants nothing more than for the Chiefs to have ONE problem to fix.

The defense has actually played very well in 3 of the games this year. Without the d we wouldn't have had a chance to win.

The d gave the offense 14 pts against Houston.

The d gave up 17 points to Denver and actually had a pick 6. This means all our scrubby offense had to do was put up 14 points and take care of the ball.

The D held the Bears to 18 points and gave the offense 7 points. The offense only needed to score 12 ****ing points against the scrubby bears.

The offense is ****ing pathetic and is the reason the we aren't above .500.

Case ****ing closed.

Alex could do what Peyton's doing this year with Denver and they'd be just a good.

Belichick could be coaching this team with Alex on it, and they'd be in SB contention.

Alex isn't be the best or worst QB, but he's far from the organization's biggest problem.

I am sure it didn't help. That really doesn't change the fact that KC held the leads at the very end of those games, and the defense couldn't maintain the leads. There is simply no way around that.

Clay, can you post the drive charts so we can see if Reid decided to pass the clock or run the clock to end the game...

Lets see if Reid hindered or helped his team with his game mgmt. and play calling.
