Dee Ford is the best edge defender through Week 8

pay that man his money

https://www.profootballfocus.com/new...er-of-the-year

Quote:
Ford isn’t just better than the rest of his AFC West rivals; he’s the best edge defender in the NFL through Week 8. The former Auburn product’s 90.5 overall grade and 91.9 pass-rush grade lead all players with 200-plus defensive snaps along the edge this season.

Propping up his 91.9 pass-rush grade is Ford’s high-end efficiency going after the quarterback. He and Philadelphia Eagles’ Chris Long are the only two edge defenders with 200-plus pass-rush snaps with a win percentage above 20%. Ford’s pass-rush productivity (11.1) also ranks second behind just Buffalo Bills edge defender Jerry Hughes, and he’s out-snapped Hughes by 70 pass-rush snaps so far this season. Ford leads all edge defenders with 45 total pressures, including 26 hurries, 10 quarterback hits and nine sacks.

In addition to pressures and pressure efficiency, time to pressure also affects PFF’s pass-rush grade, for pressures recorded earlier in the play have a heightened effect on the passer and more often lead to bigger defensive plays (i.e., strip-sacks, turnover-worthy throws). And no edge defender is better at forcing quick decisions than Ford.

Quote:
Ford leads all edge defenders in total pressures (19) on passes of 2.5 seconds or less, a testament to his ability to beat his opponent early in the down. Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald (25) is the only defender with more this season.

As a run defender, Ford isn’t among the league’s best, ranking 21st among 47 qualifiers in run-defense grade (69.7). But, more importantly, he’s far from proven to be a liability against the run, which, when combined with his elite play as a pass-rusher, is more than enough for the Chiefs’ defense. He has recorded just six run stops and two tackles for loss/no gain and missed one tackle in run defense.

Let's just hope he doesn't get a monster contract and then pull a Houston/Berry on the injury front.

He hasn't done it consistently to earn a Houston/Berry deal so hopefully it will be sensible

Agree. But teams will overbid for an edge rusher. Chiefs will have some competition.

Good edge rushers are a rare commodity. Pay the man

Tag him, make sure he continues production & stays healthy before paying him. Hasn't done jack the last 4 years, then shows up (so far). Unless Houston and Berry restructure big time, I'd guess they would definitely tag (prob around 15m for next year).

I dunno. He's been great rushing the passer but he's still a liability against the run. At least he's running towards people these days. I'd guess he's still going to command at least 15 per and that means KC has a tough decision going forward. One thing with Ford is that he's that type of pass rusher the NFL needs if they want to get pressure off the edge because QBs get the ball out so fast. The real place teams are going to start focusing money and attention is on the Aaron Donald types, quick guys that can create pressure up the middle. It takes about 8 less steps to get to the QB from the inside than the outside. Re-signing Ford, in my opinion, really comes down to what the Chiefs want to be as a defense going forward. If they stick with a 3-4, then I think re-signing or at least tagging Ford is a solid plan. If they switch to a 4-3, then they should probably let him walk unless they would want him to be a Leo in a 4-3 Under front like Seattle employs.

He's not "good" vs the run like Houston, but he's serviceable. When you can rush like he does, that's fine.

The talent has always, always been there. I was never down on Ford.

Health, of course, is and has been the issue.

And a lot of us knew that Ford was due for a big year. Contract year, duh.

Yup. I foresee a tag coming. Chiefs have no choice, really. Too good to release, injury concerns remain. And honestly, if Ford puts together another good season (assuming he finishes this season at the same pace) then Ford will be lined up for an even bigger payday.

Franchise tag as long as you possibly can - two years if you can. THen let him walk. Don't pay people unless they are 24-25 or a Quarterback.
