Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

He seems like a good person but I disagree with him on his absolute value. I'd trade for Tunsil and forget about LT for 4 or 5 years. It'll cost more but you won't get 5 game stretches where Pat's running for his life...
I was talking about Wylie there, dude...

As for OBJ I'll just play the rope a dope wait and see game, being perfectly cool with whatever Veach decides because he's earned it

If we weren't going to lock him up why trade for him? Did we just talk sweet nothings to the girl at closing time 'cause we didn't want to leave empty handed?...
Seriously???

Trading for Brown was plan B or plan C. These things happen. Why rush to lock him up when he was under a rookie contract and it wasn't clear how well he would fit into KC's offense.

Some serious hindsight going on there...

And why yes, it was closing time. Would you have rather left the bar empty-handed?

This. We needed someone. Our 1st plan was Trent Williams. I think we also had another guy we wanted, then OBJ was the next beat option.

Again alot of posters here have short memories and have warm fuzzy feelings about the super bowl. Now I'm seeing guys that wanna bring Wylie back? **** that nonsense. I'm not 100% sure we can find a better LT in the draft but I am 1000% sure we can find a better RT in the draft. 10000%

As to OBJ, just cause he's our fall back to Trent Williams, doesn't mean we need to pay him like he's Trent Williams. I'll trust Veach, but I have a hard time seeing us thinking a 150 million dollar deal is good idea....especially since they'll want most of it guaranteed.

Niang couldn’t beat our Wylie for the starting RT spot. At this point it might be best to accept he might be a career backup.

A chronically unhealthy backup too boot.

I wouldn't call 3 years of having him and at least 1 Superbowl win in that span empty handed. I fully support how they played it. We got the second round pick back already, which got us Bolton. If he plays this year under the tag, then walks, we also get a 3rd round comp pick. Not a bad cost at all for 3 years of solid LT play.

But none of that is happening unless someone comes with at least a first and a mid rounder.

Some of you are completely unrealistic in terms of OBJs value.

He didn’t give up a sack the last 8 weeks, including the playoffs
He’s made 5 straight pro bowls.
He had an elite pass blocking grade the last 9 weeks including playoffs.
He doesn’t have an injury history
He’s young

He’s also the unquestioned leader of the OL.

Veach offered him 139m last offseason and this was a far better year for OBJ.

6 years 150m deal is what everyone should prepare for, because that’s what’s gonna happen.
Wasn't there a huge difference in guaranteed money? The actual contract doesn't mean much. The guaranteed money is the bigger deal right?

Brown needs to ditch his little buddy agent and hire a real experienced agent that would bring him down to Earth. Probably do better in negotiations and get more by asking for less.

I don't think that's necessarily true. It's entirely likely he wasn't 100% through camp and we've seen that Reid prefers not to monkey with the line unless there's injury once the season starts.

I seriously doubt healthy Niang isn't a better player than Wylie.

The problem is that Niang hasn't proven he can stay healthy. That's a real problem.

Perhaps, and it might be because of injuries, but so far I have seen nothing that gives me confidence that he is a long term solution at RT. I would love to be wrong, but his injury history seems disturbing.

He also had the benefit of a shit field slowing down the pass rush in the SB, i'm not personally putting too much stock in either tackles performance from the SB.
