To extend Tyrann or not to...
Tyrann posted something interesting today...
https://twitter.com/mathieu_era/stat...154661892?s=21 Tyrann You cannot show me that I’m an option, I’ll show you I have others... ... Sorry, not sure how to embed from iPhone. ... That tweet can mean many things, but it could be correlated to his contract negotiations for an extension in KC that Veach has mentioned is a priority this offseason. It could be related to a relationship, family member, bowling league or wing eating contest. It’s plausible that the tweet is a public response to the team not wanting to pay a massive AAV to re-sign Tyrann and using other free agent and draft options as reasons they don’t NEED to re-sign him (this is business, nothing more) to try to drive down the price. Let’s talk about it... Some pros of extending his contract: Clears a nice chunk of cap space this offseason. Keeps a leader in the locker room as well as in the secondary. Continues to provide the defense with a guy that consistently takes the ball away. Some cons to an extension for Tyrann: Once he loses a step, he’s not going to be nearly as effective at his size, he’s already not a burner. He will still be good due to prep snd instincts, but will be beaten more once he loses a step. Any extension would start after he turns 30. He’s currently signed through age 29 this year. Judging from his last contract negotiation with us, he wants top of the market money. Most likely a 3 year extension. Something close to 3/48. If structured right, I’d extend him for 3 years...even at that price. The structure would need to give the team options if he falls off. |

If I were locked in a room with Adam Teicher and 10 hungry velociraptors, and I had a gun with only 10 bullets, I'd shoot Adam Teicher 10 times.

I would say that suggests remaining in the same location. But as far as further tying it to a new football contract I got nothing.

IT’S TIME TO PAY THE LANDLORD
July 1, 2021|Team Analysis By Brent Lawler Author’s side note: I want to dedicate this article to my late older brother, Rodney Lawler. One of the biggest Chiefs fans I knew and a big fan of the Honey Badger, Tyrann Mathieu. The Case of Extending Mathieu With the 2021 NFL offseason about to end, the remaining question for the Chiefs is, when will they extend Tyrann Mathieu? *Tyrann, who is affectionally known as the “Honey Badger” around the league and the “Landlord” in Kansas City, is in the last year of his 3 year contract that he signed in 2019. *I think I can speak for all Chiefs fans, when I ask: what is the hold up? Does the Chiefs front office want an extension? If not, why? Are they afraid to give more money to a big-time safety because of their recent history with former safety, Eric Berry? *I believe a contract extension will happen during training camp and but let us look at the cons and pros of extending Mathieu. * Cons against Extending Mathieu The only negative I can think of why the contract extension has not happened is because of past history with giving an extension to former safety Eric Berry. In 2017 NFL offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs signed Eric Berry and making him the highest paid safety in the NFL. Berry would only play 4 games for the Chiefs after signing that contract. A torn Achilles and following complications kept him sidelined until his released in 2019. Eric Berry was 29 at the time, the same age that Tyrann Mathieu is now. Brett Veach was not the General Manager at the time of Berry’s extension, but he was with the franchise, and this could factor in why there is a delay in extending Mathieu. Pros for Extending Mathieu Since signing Mathieu to a 3 year contract in 2019, Mathieu has become the vocal leader, not just the defense, but this team. Kansas City teammates revere Mathieu. He has brought what he like to call his, “Championship Swagger”, to this franchise. This swagger has permeated this team and led them to back to back Super Bowl appearances, with one Super Bowl victory in 2019. He is the heart and soul of this defensive unit. Since becoming a Chief, Mathieu has continued to make plays on the field when the team needed someone to step-up. Also Mathieu is a great humanitarian off the field as well with his Tyrann Mathieu Foundation. He is the type of player and ambassador that this franchise needs. The Verdict This Kansas City Chiefs fan, does not believe that Veach will let Mathieu walk after this season. I believe that this extension will be completed before the start of the 2021 regular season. How confident am I in this belief? *I believe when Tyrann Mathieu officially retires from the Kansas City Chiefs, his name will forever be remembered in the ring of honor. The Kansas City Chiefs need to bring that “Championship Swagger” and understand the rent is due and it’s time to pay the Landlord. https://arrowheadkingdom.org/chiefscast-%26-column

Using the Eric Berry situation as a negative is just dumb.

There's really no cons to extending Matthieu.
The only issue is the structure of his contract. He wants to be the highest-paid safety in the league or thereabouts. The team just has to put together a structure that both makes him happy and protects them from a Berry situation. |

Stop calling him Landlord.
He's Honey Badger. He doesn't get to choose his nickname. He needs to get over it. |

I know it's been said before, but yeah, it is such a slap in the face when a guy already has the coolest nickname in all of sports, then decides to try to re-brand himself with a new one. (That incidentally isn't nearly as good.)

If he doesn't get to choose his nickname than neither do you.

Plus, didn’t we learn form the Fisher and Schwartz situations that you can cut a player with an injury with less impact on the cap? If they can structure it where they have an out after year 2 of the new deal, that should work.
