Nick Athan.."Herm is 50/50 on coming back"

On the sports spot right now.

What are the requirements to get hired at WPI?

I mean, a 50/50 chance....Athan must have some real inside connections.

Admittedly, the team traded its best defensive player, who, ironically, was drafted under DV's watch.

I'm not even asking for Herm's defense to be on par with DV's offenses, but it's not even close. DV, whom I didn't like by the way, generated a #1. Herm has helped assemble a #32.
You're missing the point entirely.

Herm didn't arrive to find three future Hall of Famers on his defense.

He didn't arrive with the #12 overall pick in 2006.

He didn't arrive with very good players like Waters (and Weigemann) joining in free-agency.

He arrived to find a porous defense in serious need of fixing. To add insult to injury, the offensive side of the ball needed serious fixing as well.

You can't "fix" an offense or a defense without a corp of talented players and the Chiefs had neither on either side of the ball.

Hence his reason for wanting a full-rebuild.

Gunther is good with players that can play in his style of D. We all know Cover 2 is not Gunther's gig.

Having said that, he needs to go.

50 / 50 ........ Heh, that's better than I would give him if I were the GM.

I'll agree that there were some key pieces on O when DV arrived, Gonzo and Shields, namely. These are important players, no doubt.

The #12 overall pick isn't helping your argument b/c DV never had a #5 overall pick on O, either. The FA's are a wash. Herm could have pushed for whomever he liked. Even staunch Carl haters admit that the guy always tried to provide players his coaches desired, often to horrible consequences (see any D player selected, liked, or touched by Gun).

The bottom line is this: #32. For a defensive-minded coach. In year 3. This cannot be excused.

I don't even care about the O. Herm isn't an offensive guy. I'm not expecting shit on this side of the ball. I do, however, expect him to follow through on his promise to field a high-quality defense.

He's failed. He's been working on building the D for 3 years. Full rebuild? Meh. The D has to be much further along.

He got to ****ing cherry pick his defensive players and he still sucked.

Some of you need to break up with Gunther.

He was awesome when he had 2 stud pass rushers and 2 stud corners. You give ANY coordinator in the NFL that, he's fielding a top 5 defense.

So basically Vermiel was better at noticing players that could play in his offense his expertise than Herm is at noticing players that can play in his supposed best side of the ball?

I'm pretty sure you and me could have called plays for that defense and been fine.

Since the announcement yesterday, I've thought that Herm will be gone. It just makes sense. But I just watched the Holthus interview with Clark Hunt on the KCChiefs.com website and it surprised me. When Mitch asked him about Herm - Clark said that the final decision on Herm is his, but that the GM will have input. That's what he said at the press conference too. But then he followed that quickly with saying "I hope Herm will be back in 2009". Exact words.

Can a new employee (the new GM) really ask his boss (Clark) to do something he hopes he doesn't have to do to on his first month on the job? I think Clark is kind of saying he's not imposing Herm on the new GM, but that the implication is that the new GM is more likely to be philosophically compatible with Clark if he endorses keeping Herm on. I know if I watched that interview and then interviewed for the job, I'd say keep Herm because that's what I think the guy interviewing me wants to hear.

Also listening to Herm's PC today you get the sense that he thinks he's staying. That could just be his weird personality though. I think it will hit him hard if he's fired. He thought he was trading Jared Allen and not signing free agents so that he could be set up to win in 2009 and 2010. Also said he knew Carl was resigning well before Monday.

This morning I said less than 5% chance he stays. After listening to this stuff though I'd probably upgrade that to 1/3rd chance he stays. People should check out that interview - I'm curious if other people hear the same thing.

Well, if Clark makes the comment that the decision is ultimately his, I could see that happening, unfortunately.

I don't know, I was definitely surprised. I think it was something like that he is compatible with Herm, he will hire a GM that he is compatible with, therefore that person will also be compatible with Herm. One connotation would be that this is a puppet- another is that Clark is pretty hands on. He's not just handing over the keys and saying do what you want. He has opinions on how the footbal side should be run.

Listen to the interview and tell me what you hear.

Great, that better not be what happens.

I'd hope he's smart enough to know imposing Herm as part of the deal will make anyone worth a damn say no thanks.

You do understand if candidates are told they have to keep Herm you'll see top candidates pull their names from consideration right?
