Teicher: Chiefs’ Haley puts together coaching staff
Chiefs’ Haley puts together coaching staff
By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star The Chiefs now have a staff of assistants to work with new head coach Todd Haley. In keeping with their new policy of hiding as much information as possible, the Chiefs wouldn’t disclose the duties of their assistant coaches. But they retained Chan Gailey, who presumably will continue as offensive coordinator, and three other assistants from the staff of former coach Herm Edwards: Bob Bicknell, Joe D’Alessandris and Tim Krumrie. Haley also hired seven new assistant coaches, including Gary Gibbs, the likely defensive coordinator. Gibbs, 56, spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. The head coach at Oklahoma during 1989-94, Gibbs has also served as linebacker coach for the Dallas Cowboys. The other new assistants: •Joel Collier, who has 17 seasons of NFL coaching experience. Collier most recently was the secondary coach for New England during 2005-07. •Steve Hoffman, a 19-year NFL coaching veteran. Hoffman spent 16 seasons as the kicking coach for the Cowboys before moving on to special teams duties with Miami and Atlanta. •Bill Muir, a 31-year NFL coaching veteran. Muir most recently spent seven seasons as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator and line coach, though he didn’t call the plays. •Clancy Pendergast, who was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals for the last five years. •Pat Perles, who has spent most of his coaching career in college other than two seasons with the Rams in the early 1990s. Perles spent the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator at North Dakota State and recently was hired as offensive line coach at Ball State. •Dedric Ward, who played wide receiver for eight NFL seasons. He started his coaching career at Missouri State in 2006 and was an offensive assistant for the Cardinals for the last two years. Judging from the backgrounds of the new coaches, one likely offensive scenario has Gailey joined on offense by Ward (wide receivers) and Bicknell (tight ends). Muir, Perles and D’Alessandris have backgrounds coaching the offensive line, so it’s unclear what their duties will be. On defense, both Gibbs and Pendergast have been coordinators and coached linebackers. Krumrie will likely remain as the line coach while Collier could coach the secondary. Hoffman would be the special teams coach. Brent Salazar and Cedric Smith were also retained from Edwards’ former staff as strength and conditioning coaches. Through the Chiefs, Haley refused an interview request to explain his decisions. Haley’s staff The returnees: Bob Bicknell, Joe D’Alessandris, Chan Gailey, Tim Krumrie. The newcomers: Joel Collier, Gary Gibbs, Steve Hoffman, Bill Muir, Clancy Pendergast, Pat Perles, Dedric Ward. |

May have already been posted but did not see it...
A source close to Romeo Crennel said Tuesday night the former Cleveland head coach and former New England defensive coordinator is not close to joining the Kansas City staff as a defensive coordinator. It is possible, at some point, the source said, that Crennel could join former New England colleague Scott Pioli as a defensive consultant. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0...and-notes.html |

I'm waiting to hear anyone put forward a logical reason to withhold that information if they know it. Maybe they just don't give a shit that their fans are interested?

When Pioli and Haley met with them, did they just say you're going to coach the Chiefs and we'll decide your position later? But yes, keep believing it's chaos.

There may be other hires in the same vein. Hunt said they weren't through yet. The net result is that they still don't know what jobs one or more of those guys are going to have. |

If the coordinators are not known at 1 Arrowhead Drive already then this whole hiring thing is bass-ackwards. You don't hire the assistants and then tell your new coordinator this is who you have to work with. You hire the coordinator and then at the very least give them a chance for serious input on who they wants to have working for them.

8th Year NFL Coach • 3rd with Chiefs Nate Wainwright is entering his third season with the Chiefs. After serving as Manager of Football Administration from 2006-07, he currently serves as the club’s Manager of Football Operations/Player Development in 2008. In addition to his football duties, Wainwright also works with the club’s players in conjunction with Lamonte Winston and the Chiefs Player Development Department. The Wilton, Iowa native returned to his Midwestern roots in 2006, joining Edwards in Kansas City. Wainwright reports directly to the Chiefs head coach and performs a variety of both football and administrative duties, serving as a liason between the Kansas City coaching staff and other departments within the Chiefs organization. Wainwright is involved in assisting with the football budget and also works closely with the club executives in the adminstration of training camp. Wainwright works in close conjunction with the Chiefs defensive coaching staff fulfilling a number of duties during the off-season, training camp and regular season. He assists defensive backs coach David Gibbs in tutoring the clubs defensive backfield. He also coordinates the team’s schedules with Edwards and implements the club’s organizational timeline during practice and during pregame warm-ups. In addition, he handles a variety of logistical issues that arise when integrating a wide range of other events at Arrowhead Stadium around the club’s football schedule. During his tenure with Edwards in New York, Wainwright worked with the Jets defensive coaching staff, handling various duties including game plan preparations, self-scouting reports and offensive tendency reports. His in-game responsibilities in the coaching booth ranged from communicating down and distance information to the field, as well as identifying personnel packages and presenting information for potential tactical adjustments at halftime. Wainwright began his NFL career in ‘98 as a Ticket Sales Intern with the New Orleans Saints before earning a full-time position as a Ticket Sales Executive with the Saints in 2000. He also assisted the Saints coaching staff on a volunteer basis during his tenure in New Orleans. A graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in Communications, he was a high school letterman in five different sports (football, baseball, basketball, golf and track) at Wilton High School in Wilton, Iowa.
