I think being good as an RT or a nurse does give you those "intangible" skill sets that help in I.T. A server/network crashes you see a lot of panic by some techs but in my case I'm like please....I know the best way to get brains out of a lab coat. I've seen and lived in life and death on a daily basis for years and this isn't life and death, take a breath and lets go fix it.

I understand what you mean, worked a a Paramedic in KC and surrounding areas for 13+ years. Been in management ever since for the most part, and job is not stress anymore. Fact is what most people stress over I tend to find amusing ![]() |

Mine is a double edged sword. I love the job as I generally work alone and get a lot of peace and quiet. At the same time, I am tired of the hours being on third shift. Because of the hours I am now on sleeping pills and prilosec. I honestly think that if I was working normal hours I wouldn't need either drug. But, at the same time, I would not have the peace and quiet either.

I'm currently a server at Village Inn, (I'm only seventeen.)
Pros- -I usually work the night shift, (5-11, or 3-9, depending on the day.) This works quite well with my summer sleeping pattern, seeing that I'm usually up quite late. -It's a great place for a first job, I am developing person-person skills which will be vital to me when I grow older. -I have a lot of regular customers, many of whom treat me quite well and leave respectable tips. -I also get along with a large amount of my co-workers and have three understanding managers. -I love having money in my pocket at the end of every night. -And I love crossing the paths of a large amount of unique people each and every day, all of which have a very interesting story of their own. I am amazed at all the different stories/backgrounds every customer/employee has at a restaurant at a given time, and how each of our paths are crossed for a small portion of time. Cons- -I get my fair share of assholes, and people who usually do not realize that I'm currently serving four other tables as well as their own. -It's about a 26 mile drive there and back, and with my truck only getting about 13 mpg, gas has been a killer. -I have to do about an hour-hour and a half of side-work after I'm cut from the floor, what sucks about this is that I'm paid $2.13 an hour during this time with no chance to receive tips to make up the difference. This means that overall I'm paid less per hour. (For example, if I make 48 dollars in tips over six hours, that's eight dollars an hour, but if I add that hour of side work, I'm making under minimum wage. I know they have to make up the difference, but the hour of side work eliminates almost any chance I have to make above minimum wage.) -The work can be tough, and I feel many customers do not appreciate just how much a server has to do. After being here for a few months, let me tell you, it makes my whole night when a customer is understanding after a small mistake, leaves a generous tip after a good meal, or has a polite attitude throughout their meal. -This last part is both a pro and a con, and that is that the money I make in one day really fluctuates, some days I might be driving home with fifty dollars in my pocket, and other days I may not even have twenty. I'm a Pit Boss in a casino.
Pros: I like the people I work with, and there are a lot of departments that I've worked in and can work in. I play games for a living (well, watch others play). People watching at a casino is its own form of entertainment Cons: I don't get any holidays or weekends off, and at times I work grave shift. Our clientele may be the whiniest, unhappiest people on the planet. Not all, but too many. Many rules and regulations to follow with little to no gray area. Not a lot of room for mistakes. |
