If the Chiefs take Berry, or Clausen, in this draft....

I'm curious.

I see so many posts that basically paint Pioli as a moron that would pass on both of these guys because they don't fit into the perception that Pioli values certain positions, or has to protect his investment in Cassel so he doesn't look like a dumbass for making that trade (that ship has sailed as far as I'm concerned, but that's another discussion).

If the Chiefs do take Berry or Clausen, does this change your perception, and how much does it change it?

Post 218, in the thread you started while you were having a conversation with him about that very subject:

No. It would be better IMO than a lineman. But I would like to have Cody in the 2nd instead.

Right now, we don't even know if Claussen is an upgrade over Croyle. That's always the thing. Rookies are like a box of chocolates...

And it's why I never like taking skill position guys high in the draft. The big uglies are the safer bet. That's not to say we can't get skill guys starting in 2nd round. But mostly, they should be obtained via free agency.

You have to at least try. Taking "safe" picks and not taking a chance on playmakers will bite you in the ass every single time.

Green Bay took the "safe" pick in 1989 with Tony Mandarich. How did that turn out? They could have had Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, or DT.

The Bills could have had John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Dwight Freeney, and Quentin Jammer, but they took the "safe" pick in Mike Williams.

O-lineman flop just as easily as other positions. So don't give me that pussy excuse of o-line being the safe picks, because they are not.

We need a franchise quarterback, that much is certain. What's less clear is whether or not Cassel can be that player.

He didn't impress last year ... but how many of his issues were rooted in the giant pile of steaming possum vomit they call his supporting cast? That is the question.

It's part and parcel of the challenges associated with trying to convert suck into success ... it's sometimes difficult to isolate one problem area because there are so many. Right now, the safest pick for Pioli is Berry. Probably.

I don't see the potentiality of drafting Clausen as "admitting a mistake" with Cassel, and, if the folks at 1 Arrowhead share my view, the chances of him actually being the selection go up dramatically.

All the talk about this draft is that there is the most talent available in a generation at every position except QB. You are taking a big risk with a top 5 pick in taking a QB that couldn't even throw at the combine. As bad as I believe Cassel was last year, there is no QB out there that will be ready to step in and be QB on day one this year. I believe we should take a QB in the later rounds that we can develop down the road.

Yeah ... I don't see the "admitting a mistake" part, either. In a way, I do ... but not really. I kinda see it, but not totally. It's there, but not totally there.

Sometimes a quarterback just doesn't work out. It happens. Pioli has given Cassel his chance ... including the security of a good contract. The rest is up to him.

The way things stand now, if Weis wants Clausen, Clausen is going to be considered ... if not selected. Admissions be damned.

Except that Weis doesn't need to see Clausen throw.

I didn't see him elevate that steaming pile of a supporting cast at all. That said I don't see any of this year's crop of QBs able to step in. The top QBs have issues with injuries or questions about how their game will go on a pro level. Like it or not Cassel is the QB this year.
