He'll run a Pistol Offense just fine.

I wish people would stop being such negativists with regard to Alex Smith. I wanted Geno for the Chiefs more than just about anybody in the country, but I'm not going to be a bitter pessimist and dump all over A. Smith because we didn't draft him. Smith has some pretty good tools and was completely screwed over by some really, really bad coaching for the majority of his NFL career to this point. When he finally got the opportunity to play for a decent coach, he played pretty darn well.

He'll be just fine here in Kansas City where he meshes exceptionally well with the coaching staff and rest of the personnel.

If not, then we get to move on when/if that happens, but I'm not going to take a shit on a guy who was the best option available to get this team on the right track right out of the gate.

Quit being a bunch of pussies for Christ's sake.
Yeah!

You can be a passing offense in the pistol. I doubt Smith will be running a lot of read option.

Alex is a tough player. He probably had that concussion because he was being tough (though I think he was just trying to get the extra yard). He played through a torn throwing shoulder, etc. I don't think that toughness is an issue with Smith. As for the rest, a lot of us have differing opinions. Don't want to get into that right now.

Haha. Thanks for being so over-the-top, otherwise some would believe you. Had you said a 6 or a 7, I bet some people would have ran with it, even though he is still faster than that. He may be older but he's still an under-30athlete.

It is concerning that we're going with a system that asks the QB to double as a run threat with a dude that cannot stay healthy.

You can run the read option out of the shotgun formation like Vince Young did at Texas but just because we had shotgun plays last year didn't mean we were having Cassel hall balls down the sideline.

The pistol is just an attempt to get the benefits of the shotgun while maintaining your traditional downhill running game.

I'm sure there will be something in the package for Smith to run but I imagine it will be used incredibly sparingly. A trick play.

As far as I can tell, the key concept of the pistol is that you get some of the passing advantages of the shotgun while still maintaining the ability to use a power running game. The QB doesn't have to double as a run threat to make it work, although because it's not a full blown shotgun formation, it probably helps if he's mobile (which is the case with both Alex Smith and Chase Daniel).

And I'm not sure what you mean by "going with". I doubt that the pistol formation is going to become the base offensive formation for the Chiefs.

Edit: Good post, ChiliConCarnage
