Late night bullshit: The dog next door.

So there's a dog next door that's chained up in my neighbor's shitty yard.

The chain is short, about 12 feet or so. And this dog is never unchained, even though the yard is fenced in.

We've had run-ins with this neighbor before. He seems a bit "off."

Ultimately he's met the only legal obligations necessary in Greene County (I checked): the dog has a doghouse, and it is regularly fed and watered.

But it is never, ever, EVER off that chain. Far as I can tell, he never takes it on walks, never socializes with it, and just leaves it outside all day every day with a 12 foot radius.

The logical conclusion here, of course, is to mind my own business. But this dog deserves some semblence of a life, and as you may already know about me, I have an irrational soft spot for dogs.

Question: What, if anything, should I do?

I've come up with several ideas for helping this neglected dog:

1. Steal the dog.

2. Offer to buy the dog from the neighbor, then offer it to a no-kill shelter.

3. Offer to take the dog on a walk every day.

4. Buy a chain extension and stealthily attach it to the dog's chain, so he has 10 extra feet to be a ****ing dog.

This is really frustrating for me. This dog lives a terrible existence where he has zero social interaction and next to no space for him to roam. Utter neglect of your pet is not illegal, but it's definitely immoral. But my options are drastically limited. (I do chuck it some treats over the fence when I walk by, every day.)

Any other ideas are welcome, including telling me to sit on a pear.

Semantics, I didn't mean punch them in the face etc... Note I said its not legal to abuse kids.

I took a few beatings as a kid.I probably deserved a few of them and I am no worse for it.

I have never "beat" my kids, nor really spanked them much. Never had the need.

So how did this turn out? I'm expecially curious because I have a somewhat similar situation. Next door neighbor has a dog that he keeps in a cage in his chain link fenced yard. The cage is only about 4' X 6'. The dog barks constantly because it is in the cage. I saw one day that he let it out to run around the yard and the dog didn't bark at all. But 99% of the time the dog is in that cage when it's outside, even when he and his family are outside. The dog is obviously frustrated. There is a small amount of time that the neighbor lets the dog inside, but mostly it is outside. 7am - outside? And the dog drives us nuts because we are on our back patio trying to enjoy it but can't because the dog is barking constantly. I yell to get it to stop. That works sometimes. I have also yelled over the fence to please do something about his dog. I just think the guy doesn't know how or doesn't care. This is the same guy that has gone out and mowed his lawn at 7am on a Saturday morning.

I loathe people that keep their dog caged up / leashed for such a long period of time daily. if you can't spend more time with your dog, don't get a ****ing dog.

In fact...we didn't put her in a crate when we left. So she was able to roam around the house and sleep on the couch.

But I guess I should have never owned her though....right?
Not saying that at all, by all means do whatever the hell you want....it's just my opinion.

I just think dogs should have their own backyard to explore, run around n get dirty, sniff, shit n piss, mark their territory as they please, instead of being limited to walks a couple times a day so they can go to the bathroom.

I would love to get a dog...but I won't because I live in a town home 4-plex with a yard that's not fenced in and kinda shared w/ other people on the other side of the 4plex, and I'm not going to hammer down a steak/lanyard etc. so the dog can just walk around in a certain area.

Once I get a home w/ a fenced in backyard....my first order of business is to get a Giant Schnauzer. I've had miniature and a standard growing up. Would love to own a Giant.

Agree 100%.

Also agree with what Como said for the most part. I'd love to have a dog but I live in an apartment, have no kids, and I work.

I won't get a dog until I have a backyard with kids to entertain/love him while I'm not around.
