Getting a plus DE with the 1st round pick was like a best case scenario, so the draft strategy doesn't change. Just pretend we got a DE in the first and continue on from there, it's the same.

So I kinda think LB might not need to be such a priority. Looking back at Sutton's LB'er, the only one that was ever any good was DJ.
I'm thinking this group could be atleast average just by not being in such a tough system. |

And that's great but at some point you have to set up shop and start taking what the draft is giving you. As I said before, you can't continue to play the game of picking established youngsters by trading away your draft once PMII gets that sweet, sweet cash.
Theoretically, you could continue to pick up one or two of those a season, but eventually the money to pay them WILL run out, despite those marginal, annual cap increases. It's not sustainable unless you're dealing one or two out while bringing two in. And the quality coming in has GOT to be better than Hitchens and Watkins. Those two would be the first I'd send packing on my next round of pick ups if it is at all possible. I'd rather assess the board, use the 1st round pick if feasible, and trade the OTHER picks away to get another proven impact player if that's the route we're choosing to go, to attempt to play it safe. But at some point you have to identify and cultivate elite, cheap, home-grown talent. I think some are disillusioned with Veach on this front because it's easy to just sit in your chair with a head coach and go down a list of elite players available, pick the one or two you like, and start making phone calls. It's much harder to scout correctly, establish a set-in stone board, and to stick with it when things get tumultuous. Or, to adapt and shift things around when it gets especially tricky. That takes talent to do well. A LOT of it in fact. And most of us are ready to find out if this man can do more than spend money and sign certain questionable talent(s) to high dollar contracts.
