Statistically, Jones is significantly better than Buckner.

Buckner's overall stats 2016-19:

Chris Jones':

You realize it’s entirely possible that Ballard didn’t feel comfortable giving up that kind of value to the Chiefs?

I’m sure he knows we aren’t going to get that for Jones even after this trade. Maybe he only felt comfortable overspending a bit with an NFC team.

No, this strategy will keep that price from skyrocketing and it’s also a sign that Veach still wants to keep him.

The strategy has already backfired if this is actually what Veach was doing. An inferior player just got handed 21 million per and the acquiring team gave up a first to do it. Couple that with all good will being erased with the application of the franchise tag and we're probably going to have to give him asking price for him to sign a LTD

And we don’t know if the Colts even wanted Chris Jones.

You should probably sit this one out, sport.

Veach placed the non exclusive tag on him, not the exclusive.

Let the game play out...

Why not? Jones is as good as Buckner, if not better. Veach is supposed to be super stud GM. The Buckner trade just set the bar, a 1st round pick in the top half of the round. Jones should pull a 1st and 3rd.

You prefaced your post with dismissive snark and THAT was your point? Did you not realize that the vast majority of tags tendered are non exclusive? Good job, sport.

Possible, but i doubt too many people would balk at taking a pro bowler from your competition. Guessing most will want the best player they can get for a their #1 pick. Now sending a pro bowler to your competition due to salary is a different story. Might be the Chiefs crossed the AFC off the list or still believe they will sign him.

The Chiefs getting the 13th pick makes Jeudy, Lamb, or Ruggs a possibility. If you can get a similar player it makes sense to be scared off from making that trade with the team to beat in the conference.

Because there already aren’t a lot of potential trade partners and one just went out the window.

I don't think Andy wants to trade jones for any amount.

Based on just what Jones should be worth, the fact that the Niners just moved up to the 13th pick, and what the top 14 teams in the draft order are probably looking for, it looks to me like the only teams that make sense are Jags at 9th, the Browns at 10th, and the Jets at 11th.

This is irrespective of each team's cap situation, since I have no idea about that on a team-by-team basis.

But just looking at it this way, makes me think we're actually more likely to keep Jones rather than find a trading partner.

That is assuming they just receive a 1st rounder. Teams later in the draft can still give that value by throwing in other picks.
