What kind of computer does the average CP'er use?

I'm curious. Did you build it yourself or did you buy it off the shelf?

If you built it yourself... why did you chose the components you did?

If you bought it off the shelf... why did you chose the unit you did? Was it a budget buy for a tool you need or did you shell out for a boutique build?

Do you know the specs of your computer (what CPU or video card (if any) you are using?

___

I built mine in 2013. It is an Intel Core i7 4770k on a Z97 motherboard. Running a Power Color Vega 56 (Power Color Red Dragon) and 32GB of memory. 500GB M.2 for my boot drive and just a 1TB drive for personal storage (which really has nothing but photos of my foster pups.

When I built it... I had a cutting edge machine and I built it to be future proof. I originally had a 7790 video card in there but have upgraded a handful of times over the years to the Vega 56 I run now.

I still use it more for gaming than anything else and it still handles its own. I can play games like Apex Legends at an average of 97 FPS on "medium". That said... its nearing the end of it's run as the heavy game machine in the house.

Any of you gaming Geeks have one of those liquid cooled PCs?

I saw one once and thought it was awesome until I heard how much it cost. It was like $12,000 for the full setup.

It's not that expensive but it depends on how you do it...

I've got a bunch of computers. But the one I use most is a custom Mac Mini M1 with the 10GBe and 16MB ram option. These things are pretty rockin', but sadly, don't support dual boot or virtualization of Windows 10 any longer.

I do application development and testing, so I've got a custom server sporting an AMD EPYC 7002 that I picked up for next to nothing. That was a fun build!

I'm also dabbling a bit in cryptomining, but that seems to put you on par with the devil these days, so I won't list out my GPUs, for fear of a lynching.

When I access CP, I'm either using a latest generation iPad or my newly built Studio PC (i9-10850k with 64 GB Ram and a shout out to the guys in the Media area for suggestions).

Sometimes, although very rarely, I'll hop on CP on my iPhone 11, which is generally when I'm in the waiting room while one or both of my kids are at the doctor, dentist, ortho, etc.

If you're not a hardcore gamer or you're not doing Audio/Video production and rendering, any old computer should be more than fine for browsing the internet.

Prior to the computer I just built in April, the last time I built a new computer was 2015 and man, have things changed. All of the gear, cases and pre-made PC's are geared towards gamers with all of the LED fans and light strips, etc. That's a world that's well outside of mine but it sure looks like those peeps are having a lot of fun...

Sure you can.

Parallels supports it now too. VMWare will provide compatibility pretty soon.

I spent more for travel and tickets to two AFCCGs than my first 17" Alienware gaming laptop that lasted 6+ years, if that helps?

Yeah, but that's Windows 10 ARM, not x86/x64. I'd be running Windows 10 for one of two purposes- working in Visual Studio or gaming. Neither work well on Windows 10 ARM. Sure Windows 10 ARM can do emulation for x86, but man, that has to be slow. From what I understand, Parallels has no plans to do emulation for x86/x64 directly. I haven't looked at VMWare Fusion, but that was always a bit weak compared to Parallels.

I already have a custom PC in here hooked up to a KWM and kick over to play a game now and again. Haven't had any .NET work in a while, so it's been all Mac for me when working.

Gotcha. If you're needing x86/64, you're ****ed. Shame, because it runs ARM Windows really well...

I've got a M1 Macbook Pro, and an M1 iMac for work. Mini on the way eventually. Really impressive little machines. When the software developers have a chance to catch up with Silicon coded versions/drivers/extensions, the performance is going to be even better.
