This is just an assumption based on my observations of Niswanger, but I think that this staff sees the potential for Rudy Niswanger but also realie he's a work in progress.

I've said it many times this preseason, but Niswanger, under the previous staff, was raising his backside at the snap.
It is becoming more and more apparent that no worked on correcting that.

Now, with Bill Muir, it's clear they have worked to correct it, but Niswanger keeping his backside down isn't natural, so he's slow coming up out of his stance to get into position to block.

I would think they'd have to see quick improvement to go into the season with Niswanger starting at center, but I think he still remains on the roster.

Wow. Isn't it amazing that the same shit I'm coaching my 11 year olds not to do is STILL a problem for an NFL player? That means he went through High School, College and a couple of pro seasons with this same fundamental problem...I guess the need for coaching fundamentals NEVER ends.

It begs the question, what the hell were his previous coaches doing?

Practice Update 8/26 A.M.
August 26, 2009 - Bob Gretz | No Comments

From the Truman Sports Complex

For 15 minutes, Todd Haley sneered at the downpour that was falling on his team during its Wednesday morning practice. But ultimately the rain turned torrential and Haley took his team inside for the last half of the workout.

“I wanted to stay out there long enough to get everybody soaked,” Haley quipped afterwards.

He was successful in that, as players, coaches and the media were all toweling off after the practice that started dry, but about one hour into the work the skies opened up.

No matter the weather, it was a better practice for the offense on Wednesday, as QB Matt Cassel and the first unit seemed to be more efficient and productive. That was especially visible in a blitz period, where Cassel was six of seven throwing the ball. The only incompletion was a drop by TE Sean Ryan down the middle.

The QB was quick and decisive with his throws, something Haley noted afterwards.

“He was sharp and the ball was coming out quick,” said the head coach. “It’s a critical, critical drill for us and with the quarterback the ball has to come out quick. Today it was zipping around and going to the right spots.”

Other news, notes and observations from the soggy workout:

– Missing from the workout were RB Kolby Smith, TE Jake O’Connell and ILB Zach Thomas.

– Tank Tyler was running with the No. 1 defense at nose tackle, rather than Ron Edwards.

– In the second half of practice, OT Damion McIntosh was moved to the left side of the line from the right tackle spot he’s held for the entire pre-season. Working with the No. 2 offensive line on the right side were newly acquired Andy Alleman at RG and Ikechuku Ndukwe at RT.

– The Chiefs WRs got an extra session of one-on-one action against the team’s cornerbacks in a continuing effort to lift the level of production from that group. Haley said he likes what he’s seen lately from his wide guys. “

It's been said here before but IMO, he is too tall for a center. IMO, he also isn't strong enough in his core and legs to consistantly stay low enough to maintain leverage and actually make use of his size. He's sticking around because of his intelligence but it'll be interesting to see if all the running and lifting Haley is making this team do will help Niswanger with his technique. IMO, he's smart enough to do it, he is just at a physical disadvantage playing center.

sounds like Cassel is settling in at practice, and glad to see tyler get a shot with the 1's even if he isn't a long term solution...these guys - halioli - are never satisfied....
