We broke the back of that organization on our 51-7 run in two and a half quarters after being down 24 in a playoff game.

That hard-line stance sounds good... but In that case he still eats up cap space. If he “retires” ... they’re still on the hook for the signing bonus against their cap (except accelerated) and I believe his contract picks right back up if he un-retires. If they cut him, they take the cap hit and he is free to do what he wants. They have some power, but it’s nuanced. If he refuses to play or says he’s retiring, they can fine him or come after him for signing bonus return/relief... but that’s a long painful process.

He signed knowing that his best receiver was traded away and that the coach was a lame duck. He also knew the team was being run by people with the brain of a gnat. |

It’s all well and good to say the Texans should stick to their guns and just hold onto him. But them doing it is painful.
If he “retires” they have to account for that huge signing bonus they owe him. It effectively hits their cap like cutting him. If he were to file retirement paperwork before June 1, it processes like a pre-June 1 cut. They would take a $67M cap hit in that case. If he doesn’t retire and they just hold him, he eats up their cap as follows: 21: $16M 22: 40.4 23: 42.4 24: 37.4 25: 32 There are ways they can “win” the battle with Watson... but they all make it pretty certain to lose the war (winning football games).

So if he retires, how long does he have to sit out before he could join another team? A year? Two years?

The problem isn't that Easterby is in charge. Even jj watt, Mr. Texan, suggested he'd be more than happy with the right GM choice. The problem is the owner had a blatantly obvious out that would make his star players, the fans, and everybody else happy and the dumbass owner chose not to do it. I don't think anyone could have predicted that their owner would be this drawn into the cult. |
