"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

There is no way you can make that claim with any certainty. Corey Patterson got more consistent run in center last year than Greene ever has at any position.

I would like to have Furcal back but more than a modest salary over two years max is just crazy with his age and injury history. Hell two years is probably too much even at a modest rate. Not like he lit it up for the Cards after they acquired him.

I'll bet Furcal saved more runs with his defense than Theriot scored all year.

How many times does he get a chance before you say....greatness isn't there.

How many time did we run Franklin and Izzy out there befroe we gave up? How many times did Theriot start before he stopped killing us.....and so on and so on.

Greene obviously has talent. Tears it up in the minors but for whatever reason when he gets up tot eh big show he under performs.

I'm not sure how anyone can see the difference Furcal made with regards to the defense and energy level on this squad and say he isn't worth the market price for 2 years.

Furcal was the single biggest reason for the team's turnaround. It's no coincidence at all that the pitching staff suddenly 'got hot' once they had a legitimate shortstop in the field.

I know the front office has gotten a kick out of trotting dogshit out to SS and 2b over the last few years, but can we stop doing that now? It only worked when he were getting HOF play from CF and 3b. Without a Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen on your club, you have to build a more conventional team and you absolutely cannot continue to neglect the middle infield.

The SS market is horrible. Raffy is a great fit and already something of a cult-hero in STL. Bring him back.

THIS. We don't even sniff the playoffs with Theriot at shortstop. Sign him up yesterday.

He's no Rex the wonder dog, but he did provide a spark. It definitely wasn't with his bat. I'd still like to see a better option at second, perhaps some speed there. We need to be able to manufacture some runs when the bats aren't popping.

The fact is Greene is out of options, one of three things has to happen either he gets a starting gig, is a utility IF or he's gone. And with that and the fact that its not really worth paying either Theriot or Skip $3m unless Greene has a horrific ST he's probably making the roster.

Maybe with TLR gone he will relax and live up to his potential?

His 'full potential' has always been something of a wild hacker with an erratic glove.

I simply don't think he can stick as a SS; the glove's not there and the range is just as bad.

Maybe his bat can win him a utility slot, but I'd highly recommend that he learns to shag fly-balls if that's how he plans to do it. He could absolutely secure a roster spot if he could play CF adequately and spell Jay against lefties.

Furcal did make a difference for us with his defense and attitude. But the reason for the the turn around in the bullpen was Dotel. There were several players that said as much too.
