The "I just got back from the gym" and this is what I have eaten thread.

Okay, so there are a ton of guys in here that are working out, trying to work out, or 'thinking' about working out.

So, I figured I would start a thread. I am all about making myself accountable. The more people that I tell about working out, the more people I would let down by not going.

If you go to the gym.... then post here when you get back. If you do P90X, post here when you get done. If you ride the excercise bike.... post it here.

Anything you do to get in shape.... share with the board. I know I have gotten some great advice and feedback.

Also, post what you eat. If you post everything you eat, and you know others will be critical, you may think twice before you grab a Twinkie.

Okay, so, I went to the gym. I did five minutes on the cross climber to warm up. I stretched for about three minutes.

Then, I did three sets of squats with just 135. I did back extensions and hanging leg lifts. Three sets each. I did leg curls, calf extensions, abductor and adductor excercises as well.

On my leg day, I do very light chest exercises to work on my explosive power. I do three sets of six pushups as explosively as I can. I throw the excercise ball up like a chest pass while laying on the bench.

Then, I finished off my workout with 30 minutes on the eliptical.

As far as my diet.

Breakfast two pieces of peanut butter whole wheat toast, protein shake, and banana.

I have had another banana, two yogurts, and a handful of cashews as snacks.

I didn't have a 'lunch' per se.

Kids had sloppy joes with lean beef (as if that makes it great).... I took a baked potato, and put a serving of sloppy joe over it, with jalapenos and 2 oz's of lowfat cheddar cheese.

I have also had shotgun with water, and synthesize with water.

I won't eat again before bed.

Okay, I know putting everything down here will open me up to criticism. I know some will think that I am doing things all wrong. I appreciate any advice, but I have done a lot of reading and talking to trainers.... so, I have an idea of what I am doing.... or at least what I think I am doing.

The point of this thread, isn't to get into pissing matches about how to do things.... but rather to give ourselves a gold star for making an effort.

Try not to beat anyone down on this thread, because this is about encouragement.

still entirely chick n broc. Ughh, trying to vary. I bought some frozen peas. Ate well today, though. Protein shake, too.

One quick tip w/ protein shakes. If you're close to polishing off your milk (under half o container)

You can add protein pwdr an ice cube or three, this is excellent for agitating the lumps out, fairly fruggle, too. Yeah boyeee.

Eating homemade pizzas. One pesto with pine nuts. The other is zuchini, mozz, and garlic grape tomatoes. Delicious.

At the gym, one of my fellow kettlebellers asked me if I'd seen the video of the guy doing a TGU with the barbell with 135 on it. I hadn't, so I came home and youtubed it. Holy shit.

I'd be impressed with myself if I could do that with half the weight. Jesus.

I can do it with a 32 kg kettlebell, but the balancing of the bar is what amazes me. Speaking of... I got loaded and started kettlebell swinging my kids tonight... I think I might have a sore back in the morning.

Never tired the kettles. Do they offer a more thorough workout than dumb/barbells? And do I need to grow a handlebar mustache to workout with them?

And you're quite the clever guy swinging the kids like that. Now, the wife has to rub you down, and stuff. Well played!

The advantages of kb as far as I'm concerned:

1) It gives you an absolutely amazing cardio.
2) It teaches you how to focus and link your muscles in the tradition of all great athletes.
3) It trains muscle groups working together vs. just focusing on a specific muscle. This translates into true functional strength vs. just having big muscles.
4) It gives you a badass core workout while also working other areas.

Hmm. The older I get, the more I'd like to start focusing on core and cardio workouts. I'm going to have to research this some more.

Ever done the P90X workout? That's my normal workout these days. I know Silock isn't a big fan, but it has been exactly what I needed as a workout, and it's really jumpstarted my interest in fitness. It has some decent core workouts, plus Yoga, which I suck at, but push through.

P90X is fine for beginners. I have no problem with that aspect of it. It's just not a good substitute for a real exercise program once you get beyond that initial phase.

I haven't done it, but it seems (a lot of it at least) to be similar to the programs I usually run... concentrating on actual fitness and strength vs. just "pumping iron." I do agree with Silock that you can customize a program for yourself that will probably be just as good. That being said... if P90X is motivating you and keeping you going... that is the most important thing. I'm a firm believer in jumping on different fitness bandwagons and programs to keep things fresh and keep you motivated. As most on here will attest... that's how I am with kettlebell. I'm completely bonkers on it right now... It was crossfit a couple of months ago. It will be something else in a few more months. The cool thing is that from each "fad" I get into, I keep some things that I really like and add them into whatever fad I'm doing.

It's all good... as long as you're doing it.

It's basically circuit training with light weights/body weight stuff. There's also yoga and plyometrics and stuff, but . . . meh.
