Do we want DeHop?

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

3 fairly significant injuries that each caused him to miss multiple games at age 29 and 30 is going to lead to more injuries. That's what happens with these guys. They break down and once they get injured they continue to get injured.

If Juju played on the Cardinals for 16 games this year? He gets 150 targets, 100+ receptions, 1200-1300 yds and probably 6 or 7 TDs, but I'm not too worried about TD production at WR. Who else was gonna get the ball thrown to? Hopkins played 9 games and led them in receiving yds and it's not like they didn't pass it.

Seriously look at Marquise Brown had 64 targets 43 receptions 485 yds and 3 TDs through the 6 games Hopkins missed. Right when Hopkins comes back Brown misses games 7-11, so now Hopkins is the guy to forcefeed.

Who else was gonna get it, Greg Dortch and his 5'7"? Rondale Moore would have been a good option, but he only played for 5 weeks with DHop playing and Moore only played 8 games all season. Well I guess they could have thrown it to Zach Ertz instead of DHop, but that actually couldn't happen because Ertz only played the first 9 games and 9 snaps of game 10 and DHop missed the first 6 of those. So that leaves us with

Let me check...

AJ Green and Robbie Anderson who was with Carolina to begin the season and barely played when he was with the Cardinals.

So let me ask again, who else was gonna get the targets?

I think the above should illustrate pretty well why DHop got as many targets as he did. Not because he was some awesome talent, but because he was the least incompetent of those playing.

Juju gets to my numbers pretty easily I think, because he'd be by far the best and most competent receiver on that team. A team with trash at QB, trash and hurt at there skill positions, and the a big variable considering everything else, only 3 teams threw the ball more than the Cardinals.

Also no one's gonna address the biggest part of my post?

I can find multiple examples of guys that got hurt at an old age and were never anywhere close to the same. I can find multiple examples of elite guys that fell off when they turned 30+. I can find multiple examples of 30+ year old receivers that continued producing at a high level for several years, but in all of those examples that player didn't have back to back season ending injuries at 29 and 30 years old. So here's an exercise for someone that wants DHop

Please find me an example of a WR who produced under those same scenarios. Guy that's over 30, so 31 or older and had multiple injuries between 27 and 30.

Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and tore his MCL in 2011 at age 28. Returned the following season to rush for just 2097yds and 12 TDs. Finished his career with three more 1,000+ yard seasons, including a 1,485yd 11 TD effort at the age of 30.

At age 32, Terrell Owens suffered a broken fibula in 2005 prior to playing in SB XXXIX, catching 9 passes for 122yds. He went on to post three consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons between the ages of 33-35 (1,180yds, 1355yds, 1052yds and 36 TDs), and 4,659 yards and 52 TDs over his final five seasons.

Anquan Boldin suffered a series of injuries between the end of 2009 through 2009, including an MCL, a high ankle sprain, and of course the incredible smashing of his face that required surgery to his sinus area and wiring his jaw shut, between the ages of 28-29.

Boldin went on to catch 423 passes for 4,221yds and 30 TDs over the next six seasons. He put together a pair of 1,000+ yard seasons (1,179yds and 1,062yds) between his 33rd and 34th birthdays.

Jerry Rice tore his ACL at 35. Returned the following season, played 16 games, caught 82 passes for 1157yds and 9 TDs. Continued for the next five years to amass more than 6,000 yds receiving, and 39 TDs after tearing his ACL.

Addressed.

If you think OBJ is taking a $10m dollar prove it deal, I've got some ocean front property in Kansas I'd like to sell you.

Hopkins is a better receiver than JuJu and actually fits our other complimentary pieces better than JuJu. If we can get Hopkins for a 4th round pick this year and 3rd round pick next year, we should make that deal. Having Hopkins on the roster allows Skyy Moore to concentrate on being the slot receiver and gives us two outside receivers in Hopkins and Toney who are both excellent at beating man coverage. MVS is then your speed guy to occupy the deep part of the field and allow Kelce and Moore to work the middle zones. Draft another developmental WR in rounds 2-5 and let's go win another chip.

You're talking about the 21 and 22 seasons, right?

Because I see one "significant" injury there. The MCL tear.

His hamstring issue was coaching/trainer malpractice. He aggravated his hamstring during practice and then played on it and suffered a Grade 2 tear.

Other than those issues, Hopkins has had nagging/mentioned injury here and there throughout his career, but nothing serious that caused him to miss large chunks of the season.

Like I said, I'm not gung ho for him - cautious and potentially interested if the price isn't exortbitant - but other than being a human and age 31, there's not a glaring injury history of pattern of missing times due to injury that stands out. This isn't a huge injury risk guy.

I mean even playing only 9 games he had 717 yards with Mcsorley or whatever the random guy is playing in most the games. Even if he plays 12 games for us and we have him in the playoffs that’s a pace for 1000 yards. Having an elite talent for 80% of the season (and possibly the whole season) is something the chiefs could definitely use.

Probably good odds that he got tagged for PEDs because he needed them to recover from the injury that ended his previous season.
