****Seahawks @ Chiefs Preseason GDT****

So many players to finally see in action.

No injuries and a Chiefs victory would be swell.

If Dee Ford breaks out this year that's cool.

If not...not looking good.

Mercilus is a poor example BTW. Had 6 sacks his first year. The anti-Ford.

6 sacks in 740 snaps vs. 4 sacks in 479 snaps.

This is the first year DF will play an entire season. It takes time to develop.

People calling D Ford a bust are complete idiots, and are probably the same people who wrote off Fisher, Berry, Hali after his switch to OLB, and others. You have to give players time to transition to the NFL. You especially have to give then time if they have played behind two pro bowl OLB and have never played a full season as a starter.

Hill had Sherman beat here. Bad throw. Maybe it still should've been caught, but I can't tell if Sherman batted it down.

Kei Russell has been playing with the twos in camp but he played w/3s yesterday b/c they wanted to give Steven Nelson some extended work.

I was wondering why Russell wasn't getting snaps earlier. Makes sense

Well, I, for one, thinks Ford is a bust and I'm not a COMPLETE idiot. And yeah it takes time for some to develop, but good heavens, this guy is now in his third year and I haven't seen him develop any single skillset other than his first step. Combine that with Hali's subtle admonition that the guy doesn't work when in the building, and well, you have the makings of what I'm calling a bust.

I totally agree with Milk in that if he wasn't a first round pick, he'd be running 3rd string (if that). I think the kid just doesn't have the heart of a warrior. Not that he's soft; he just doesn't want it bad enough to really work on his game.

The idiot has spoken.

This makes sense.

I think people are being too hard on Nelson. Doug Baldwin is arguably the best slot WR in the NFL. He's VERY good. Those 14 TD's last year were no fluke.

He has shown flashes, and if it weren't for one dismal run play where he ran backwards, the majority of average fans wouldn't be talking about his 'run' defense. He has an amazing first step, and in the pass rush game, thats invaluable. He has demonstrated good coverage skills and athleticism from the OLB position. He has worked behind two All-Pros. You simply cannot write a guy off because they haven't been on the field full time, or have taking longer to transition. Not everyone gets it the first year, especially not when you aren't even on the field.

Ford will have a good season. I guarantee it. And everyone will shut up.

Sorry stumppy, I just don't see it. From what I've seen, he just sorta runs around out there and is seldom in the pile. He doesn't seem to exhibit good, solid, smack-em-in-the-mouth football skills. Nonetheless, I sure hope you're right about the guy as we could certainly use another dominant OLB.

Marcus Smith
Demarcus Lawrence
Trent Murphy
Jeremiah Attaochu
Kony Ealy

That's a list of the edge guys that went in that 2014 NFL draft. Only Mack and Ealy look like above average starters at this point. History says a couple of these guys should break out in the next couple of years, and Ford has as good of a chance as any of them. He's probably been the most productive of that group so far, aside from Attaochu (who's also played significantly more snaps).

Demarcus Lawrence had 8 sacks last year. I would be very happy if Dee Ford got that production this year.

Damn I had no clue he was that productive last year. He was also just suspended and obviously has some off the field issues.

Still though, that's 8 sacks on 700 snaps. It's completely reasonable to think Ford can accomplish that this year.

They arent game planning yet...wait until they get him space. He's going to make plays this year...

The O-line looks like Smith will getting a bit more time...which, in turn, will give Hill time to stretch the field.

Wrong.

All Ford has proved he can be thus far is a situational pass rusher. Athleticism means jack shit if you don't know how to play the game are not assignment sound. Your claims that he is somehow good in coverage is not backed up with any evidence.

He is a horrible run defender who plays with poor leverage and even worse eye discipline. His coverage drops are few and far between (rightly so as he is best attacking the backfield), and his tackling technique is adequate at best. He was drafted to replace an aging, less productive Hali but yet cannot supplant him in the lineup. In fact, re-signing Hali was a priority for the Chiefs because Ford has not shown an indication he is the heir apparent.

Ford was drafted too high to be just a situational rusher. The fact he sees limited snaps is as much an indictment of Ford as it is a testament to the abilities of Hali and Houston. He has an opportunity in front of him now where he can make his mark and win the coaching staff over that he can be the guy.

It is only week one of the pre-season, but the eye test screams he is not ready to be a starter. Time is ticking, and there are other competent options that can do what he does already on the roster that are younger and cheaper.

Ford will be here this year regardless - too much dead money for a release or trade - but his playing time opportunities will speak volumes as to how he is truly perceived by the organization moving forward, regardless of the injuries to Hali/Houston. Don't be shocked if Ford's snap totals aren't much higher this year than the last two seasons....
