Chiefs Tyler Bray, not Patrick Mahomes, is the Chiefs’ No. 2 quarterback so far - Page 7

When the Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes II with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft — after trading a 2018 first-round pick to do it — it would have been easy for backup quarterback Tyler Bray to mentally go in the tank.

The 25-year-old Bray spent the previous four seasons learning coach Andy Reid’s offense, and the Chiefs still opted to sacrifice premium draft capital to select another young quarterback with traits to mirror Bray’s cannon for an arm and love for the deep ball.

But Bray, an undrafted free agent in 2013, is no stranger to competition. He beat out 2014 fifth-round pick Aaron Murray for the backup job a year ago, though he had the No. 2 spot usurped from him by veteran Nick Foles during training camp.

And Bray functioned as the Chiefs’ No. 2 quarterback ahead of Mahomes this week during the Chiefs’ first three of 10 voluntary offseason practices. Bray knows that as long as he has a job in the NFL, he has a chance to play.

“It’s the same thing every year — you’ve got to come out there and compete,” Bray said. “We’ve drafted a guy every year … you can’t just sit back (and say) ‘Aw, here we go again.’ I mean, it’s the NFL. They’re going to bring in guys every year that are competing to start.”

Reid emphasized Thursday that Bray again has an opportunity to hold onto the No. 2 job, despite Mahomes’ presence and the fact Bray is slated to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

“He’s going to compete — I would tell you that’s what he does,” Reid said of Bray. “He’s earned the right to be in that position and now he’s got to maintain it.”

What could complicate things for Bray is that the Chiefs’ No. 2 quarterback only gets a handful of practice snaps with the starters during the regular season. If the Chiefs are committed to getting Mahomes some snaps, it might make sense to install him as the top backup so he gets meaningful reps with the top offensive players.

But Reid also noted Thursday that young backup quarterbacks can still get on-field practice work during the regular season.

“Where they get their reps is on the scout team,” Reid said. “Then you try to tie that in to what (the first-teamers) do the best way you possibly can.”

Which makes the mental reps the backups take — when they watch starter Alex Smith run the offense — as important as on-field reps. And given the way coaches and teammates have complimented Bray’s improved knowledge of the playbook, it appears he has taken advantage of those mental reps.

For instance, Bray wasn’t asked to execute all of the Chiefs’ offensive concepts in practice last season. But Reid said that is no longer the case.

“For the most part, this is the first time he’s had the whole thing thrown at him and been expected to do it,” Reid said. “He’s doing a nice job with it. Tyler is very much improved from where we initially got him.”

Bray says he’s at the point where he’s able to point out when teammates are lined up incorrectly, even slightly.

“Just detailing where guys are supposed to be lined up,” he said. “Getting them to where they need to be and not just being like ‘Oh, he’s close enough.’”

Reid also praised Bray’s instincts and vision.

“There’s more than just the playbook,” Reid said, “there’s doing the things at the line of scrimmage that we ask him to do and adjustments we ask him to make, and he does well with those things.”

Bray and Mahomes aren’t the only quarterbacks in line behind Smith. Joel Stave, 25, was signed to the practice squad in November and re-signed to a reserve-futures contract in January. He’s 6 feet 5, 230 pounds and has a strong arm.

“He competes … he’s a smart kid and he’s learning,” Reid said. “Is he ‘there’ yet? No, but he’s showing improvement and that’s all you can ask of him until he gets a few more snaps under his belt.”

Stave says he’s primarily working on his footwork, decision-making and knowledge of the offense.

“It’s just a matter of continuing to understand the offense as well as I can,” he said, “and then playing as fast as I can.”

I'll be shocked if Bray enters the season at #2. Happy, because that means he's made a huge leap but shocked, nonetheless.

I wouldn't be shocked if he was cut and replaced with a journeyman, either.

You've have made several valid points as well. I just feel you're digging your heels in with this statement.

I just don't care about hoping to be bailed out by the refs on shit execution. The only reason its pass interference is because of the throw and Kelce having to stop and contort his body in an unnatural way to even attempt to make a play on the ball. And it's not like it was blatantly obvious. When I saw it happen live I wasn't even sure he got there early so why the **** should I yell at the refs for something they can't review just because they don't have the ability to pause time?

If Bray makes it as the #2 this season it just means, in my opinion, that they really don't want Mahomes taking snaps at all this year.

Dorsey/Reid invested in the future in this draft. Just because they don't put Mahomes upfront, before he is completely ready, doesn't mean their faith is lacking.

There are other factors that exist in this scenario, whether we want to acknowledge them, or not (all of which will be eliminated once Mahomes is 100% ready):

- Smith being userped: He has a history with this, and regardless of justification for it happening (here or there), Reid is a players coach and keeps these things in consideration. Reid has gone out of his way to let Smith know that what happened it SF isn't happening here.

- Bray most likely isn't long for this league: Let him take the lumps for Mahomes, while he builds confidence. If Smith goes down, we could be in for a rough season regardless of Mahomes or Bray starting. Let Mahomes stay focused on what is important and develop him according to plan. Most acknowledge he won't be ready until 2018. If that is what needs to be done, thank you Tyler Bray; you have earned your last 4 years' paychecks.

They didn't miss critical PI plays or call holding on only one team in a tight score. All the inconsistency at Arrowhead favored the Steelers.

The one observation you overlooked was that there was never an opportunity or reason to make a game altering call/no call in the final minutes. It was a blow out...and Tom Brady was winning. NFL was getting what it wanted...and practically called no penalties on them. 2-10 is essentially perfect.

The Chiefs had 2 extra penalties called on them for a whopping 7 more yards than the Steelers but they were only consistent in the Patriots-Steelers game.

I didn't watch the Patriots-Steelers game but I'm 100% confident that the refs didn't miss a single call and were perfect.

They had one PI penalty ignored in a 2 point game...and the only holding call of the second half took points off the board.

The amount of penalties isn't as important as which ones directly impact the outcome..and when they are called/arent called.

NFL didnt address what every fan wants...judgment penalties being challenged. It wasn't even discussed at the owners meeting...and never will be. Its how they control point spreads...and dictate close games.

The sooner you wrap your head around that NFL was created by the Mob for skirting gambling laws...and that its grown into a billion dollar industry which is far more profitable than network deals/ticket revenue...the sooner everything will start making sense.

The whole convoluted "is it a catch..is it not a catch" is rooted in making the rules as muddy and malleable as possible. Then they have their talking heads repeat "I dont even know what a catch is anymore"....and the public eats that horseshit up...arguing among themselves.

Goodell is on record saying that 'live officials are crucial to the game"...in response to having everything being digitally reviewed. What he's essentially saying is "we need officiating errors to continue" even though there is technology available to minimize mistakes.

Alex Smith has struggled so badly with Andy Reid offense and is first down challenged. Tyler Bray is just now able too get guys in the right place they belong. I don't see why Andy Reid offense is so complicated for bubble screens?

I came in expecting people to meltdown over a QB that has been a Chief for 1 MONTH, instead see this.

If you fully believe that conspiracy stuff, then you have to be on the Mahomes support train. The only way the Chiefs will win a SB is with star power getting the breaks that the NFL officials allow.

Refs in the NBA give star power the benefit and they much or can much impact the outcome of the game.

Chiefs get that kind of luxury for star power with Patrick Mahomes II then good for us.
