The Right Thing.

Its occured to me, that often this time of year, we, as individuals and families are wrapped up in things like football games, playoff hopes, hanging plastic on our windows, Christmas shopping and any plethora of Things in our daily grind. Most of them, are of little significance in the big picture.

I'm not exactly sure why I'm compelled to make this post, but I am.

This winter, as the temperature drops below zero outside my home, and as I celebrate a win over the hated Donkeys, some dose of reality is sinking in that needs to be said.

This Christmas season, there are alot of things we can do, as individuals just because they are "the right thing" to do.

This year I encourage those of you who can to find someone they can help. There are alot of kids without proper coats, shoes and clothes in poor condition. I wish I could direct you to specific places, but can't right now. If you have the time, the finances and the same kick in the craw that I do, please contact your local school, or a charity program, or a food bank, and see what you can do to help get a kid in a proper pair of shoes, a warm enough coat, and maybe some toys for Christmas.
I know that many churches, school nurses/administrators, as well as local govt programs will be able to give lists "boy, age 12, size 9 shoe, likes football" type lists.

For those without the financial availability to help someone in that capacity....there are Still alot of things you can do. Scoop the snow off the walk for that old widow across the street, take the son of a deployed, wounded or KIA soldier to the Y to play some ball...do something.

Another option, I'm going to quote from the Michael Yon website, because I think its very true, and something you, and your children can do for less than $.50. Write a letter, have your kid draw a picture...whatever. I know, that during the holidays, many of our deployed men and women are having a tough time.

"More than 150,000 troops are at war in Iraq, Afghanistan and stationed other places by land and sea. It's time to remember them, and at least send a letter. Care packages are great, but simple letters can be powerful. The Department of Defense has sorted through endless websites and charities, and does an excellent job organizing links to sites that allow people to help the troops. With a single click, people can donate books to troops, or computers, or frequent flier miles, or they can help wounded veterans or grieving families, or Iraqi children. There are so many options. http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/ "

As an individual, we can all make someone's holiday brighter with very little effort. As a Group of Chief fans, think of the combined good we can do, but each doing one small gesture, that is "the right thing".

Its almost a month until Christmas, with Thanksgiving around the corner. While my
situation has changed, the need for common good will has not. I was reminded of this thread and the time to recharge myself to do this by the forthcoming of the Kansas City Secret Santa.

I encourage each of you to think about what you can do to help someone else as we enter winter, and the holiday season. There are things you can do, that won't cost money.

1. Help someone plastic their windows.

2. I found the gift cards to the elementary guidance counselors very, very well recieved last year and plan on doing this again, and possibly recruiting some others to buy one or pitch in to do even More. If you have the means, please consider calling your local guidance counselor, offer them a gift card, to use to purchase coat-boots-shoes-snow pants for a struggling family. I guarantee every one of them will have an immediate idea of the best use. They can take them with a parent, make the purchase, and make sure it is used for its intended purpose.

3. I've joined a group in my area, and will be for the first time helping deliver some thanksgiving meals for 3-4 families.

I'm sure others have great ideas, that can be linked here.

I may very well try to build on the idea of the gentleman from KC and try the "$20 secret santa" someday.

The company where I work does what's called "Christmas in October." It's an organization that helps the elderly/impoverished/ill with home fix-ups. This year was the first year I got involved. It's amazing how much work 20 people can do on a house in a day. We painted, caulked, fixed a couple of broken windows, cleaned and repaired gutters, fixed a leaky faucet... well, you get the idea. She was so appreciative and we all felt great lending a helping hand.

What have you done? What can you do?

I challenge each of you to start small today.

Hold a door open for someone you don't know and normally wouldn't. Say Hello to someone passing in the street.

I'm always interested in great ideas.

Doing the Right thing....feels good.

My company adopted a family in need. There are 6 kids living with their grandparents due to their parents being incarcerated (sp?). They range from 6 months to 16 years old. I'm glad you bumped this thread. It reminds me that I need to stop by Wal-Mart before going to work to pick up a few more things to take in.

As for holding the door open for people and saying hi to people passing by, I do those things all year. Christmas isn't the only time of year you can be courteous.

My kids and I delivered Thanksgiving meals for our church. That was pretty cool.

I always make it a point to drop whatever change I have into the bell ringer's bucket.

I always feel that there is more I can do, but so far that's it for this year.

People should be nicer to others all the time, especially Mr. Bob Dole.

Christmas is just another reminder that we can and should reach out to our fellow man. Above the waist.

Indeed. I try to do stuff throughout the year, but I must admit, I do more during the holidays. I guess it's laziness. My church is pretty good about reminding us all year long, so I am getting better, but it's amazing how fast time goes when you are over 30...seems like just yesterday we were all bitching about the Dallas Cowboys loss, and here it is a year later...

I make it a point not to flip people off in traffic for cutting me off, I always try to help people with holding doors, or carrying stuff for them...little things like that. But I know there is more I can do.

My apologies for the confusion. I meant that we should all be nicer to Mr. Bob Dole.

After all, he is named after a can of fruit.
