Chiefs Going 3-4 -Adam Shefters Blog

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Glenn Dorsey, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City announced its coaching staff this week. What it didn’t announce is that the Chiefs are planning to switch to a 3-4 defense.

Under the guidance of new defensive coaches Clancy Pendergast and Gary Gibbs, the Chiefs are turning to the defense that has done so well for Pittsburgh and is back in vogue in the NFL. The Chiefs are going 3-4.

Now Kansas City is going to have to tailor its personnel accordingly. But what is most intriguing and mysterious about it is where last year’s first-round pick, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, fits in. Dorsey might not be stout enough to play nose tackle in a 3-4, and he might not be big enough to play end in that style of defense.

One year after becoming Kansas City’s top pick, there now are questions about Dorsey’s role.

But the changes now are coming fast and furious in Kansas City, mainly on defense.

It seems like dorsey is a soft 300 hundy too, not a guy that really crushes at the point of attack

Turk Tank(for now) Dorsey.

I honestly think Dorsey will make a good end, and save your" He's not long enough" shit.

He can tie up blockers, or blast through them. We'll see.

If we loose Hali we are going to have another Kwika mitchell scott fujita deal going on, where they leave and then play well

I love a 3-4 Defense. However, currently, we have maybe 2 or 3 front seven players that would actualy fit in a 3-4.

DJ could easily move to OLB in the 3-4, and I think if he can get his head wrapped around the scheme, I think he could truly excel as a pass rusher.

Dorsey I think if he put on just a little bit of weight would probably be good end.

And then after that, Im thinking that if you are a member of the front seven you had better be ready to be looking for a new team. The Chiefs would need 3 new starting LB (Ray Manaluga?) a NT and another end, cause I'm not sure Hali can cope with that spot, and frankly Tank and Turk are turds.

And why do you suppose he got tangled with O-Lineman?

It's because he lacked the speed to get around the edge, so he had to attempt to bull rush, or make the stupidest spin move inside that I think I've ever seen.

The guy is slow and lacks athleticism.

There's no way in hell he has the tools to play OLB in any scheme.

He will be freed up to make plays all over the field, and he will.

Turk and Boone make very good 3-4 ends.

Dorsey will be fine at NT, Edwards and Tank are good backups at the position.

If anyone is happy, it has to be Hali. This is the perfect defense for his skill set.

DJ should move inside where he will be allowed to use his range.

If the season were starting today, I think Brian Johnston would be given the first shot to be a starting OLB.

Carr and Flowers will be allowed to be more physical at the LOS.

The Chiefs will add some pieces, but the pieces they have fit better than some here realize.
So the very same personnel that recorded a record low in sacks is now going to be magically fixed in the 3-4?

Are you high? No one is this much of a homer.

The talent on this roster is a ****ing joke. The sooner you come to grips with this, the happier you'll be as a fan.

He has a good burst, and a good motor. He was having problems taking on a T one on one from a down position.

We are going to move pollard up to the inside, have derrick johnson be rush outside line backer, hali the other outside linebacker, tank turk and dorsey on the inside. Carr flowers on the corner, morgan and Mcgraw at safteys then draft up from there. Sounds likea good start

they were talking about that on 810 awhile back, hali's moves coming from a stand up position are enhanced and gives him more options

I had nearly the same exact argument last year when he was moved to RDE.

I said he lacked the speed to get around the edge, and that the LT would not respect his outside rush, and that he would be manhandled by the LT.

Everyone said I was wrong, that he'd be fine there.

He simply is not a good fit at any position in a 34.

When the Patriots agreed to a five-year contract extension with

through the 2011 season. Not so. The deal actually extends through 2013.

This is a significant point, because it means Warren is under contract
to the Patriots for the next seven seasons, not the next five.

Warren received a $7 million signing bonus and $7 million option bonus
as part of the extension. The extension includes $18 million in
guarantees. The three-year average of new money is $7.4 million.

The base salaries break down as follows:

# 2007 -- $1.075 million

# 2008 -- $1.45 million

# 2009 -- $1.225 million

# 2010 -- $2.9 million

# 2011 -- $3.1 million

# 2012 -- $3.25 million

# 2013 -- $3.90 million
doesn't seem that ridiculous of a contract. certainly not the mountain of cash that we've paid dorsey to become completely obsolete in our 'new defense.'

this is all for naught, though, because 1) this article is purely speculation, and 2) at worse, we'll go to a 4-3 3-4 hybrid defense (like the patriots--we'll run a base 4-3 with a 3-4 look, IMO)

see how that went? base speculation. and I didn't even get paid for it!

He will be tried there at the OLB if they move to 3-4. I'm just saying they won't let him go. I think he'll be a good fit there. So we both have our takes firmly established.
