"During 2007 while playing against the Seattle Seahawks, Alex Smith was sacked by Seahawks’ defensive tackle Rocky Bernard. Smith suffered a Grade Three separation of his right shoulder – which happened to be his throwing arm . Team doctors determined that surgery would not be necessary. Smith was out for the next three games. After returning to the lineup on October 28, he managed to play until November 12th in which the 49ers were ironically playing the Seattle Seahawks again , Coach Mike Nolan determined that Alex Smith was not yet well enough to play. He was replaced by Trent Dilfer and was placed on injured reserve on December 11th to give the shoulder time to heal. After further review, it was determined by an orthopedic surgeon that the shoulder had not healed properly and Smith would have a surgery on his shoulder which ended his 2007 season.

"Alex Smith returned in 2008 and played in two preseason games as the 49ers second-string quarterback and on September 10, Smith was again placed on injured reserve after being diagnosed with a broken bone in his shoulder which was caused by a wire left in his shoulder during his earlier surgery ending his 2008 season."

He was no more injury prone than Trent Green from 1999-2001. Green missed the entire season and was only needed in eight games in 2000. He clearly wasn't 100% in 2001 but played anyway.

Smith's throwing shoulder was injured, Nolan didn't believe it to be serious, which caused Smith to miss far more playing time than if it had been dealt with properly initially. The 49ers ****ed that up, not Smith.

The health issue that concerns me about Smith are concussions. Aikman and Young dealt with concussions later in their careers. Both saw their level of play deteriorate.

What's convenient is to forget that Green's lost '99 season/'00 starting job was due to a pre-season cheap-shot that was about as low-down despicable as anything any of us have ever seen in the NFL. The guy went 5 years without missing a start here.

After Warner was injured, he started five games in 2000. He started 16 games for the Chiefs and clearly wasn't 100%, but he was able to play because it wasn't his throwing shoulder that injured.

If you listed multiple injuries that caused Smith to miss games, I'd agree that he was injury prone (much like Moeaki). But if you're claiming he missed games due to the injury to his shoulder, that's not the same.
