Game manager. What is that exactly?
During the course of the season the term 'game manager' has been used frequently to describe certain QB's in the league; usually in a negative sense. I was curious if there is a consensus on just what the heck that means to people here.

To me a game manager isn't a bad thing. I see it as someone who tries to keep moving the chains, and if that takes three plays of 4 yard gains, be it running or passing, that's ok as long as the chains keep moving.

Of course if the team is down by several scores, or time becomes an issue, then longer chunks of yardage would be necessary. To me a game manager would recognize that fact and try to manage the game accordingly at that point.

What do you all think? And is the opposite of a game manager a game mis-manager?

Cassel is garbage. A guy that turns the ball over enough to lead to a 2-14 season is not a game manager.

I somewhat agree with you about the aggressiveness comment but to me, Dalton and Ryan are only aggressive because the weapons they have on the outside. They're still managing the game in the sense that the system is designed to get the ball to those playmakers.

Matt Ryan lost the elite talent he had at the skill positions and still had his second best statistical year of his career.

With Julio Jones and Roddy White at WR:

4700 yards 32tds 68%comp

Without Julio Jones, and a banged up Roddy White (they also lost Sam Baker to ir and Tyson Clabo to FA)

4500yars 26tds 67%comp

No way is he a game manager. The difference in the win loss column can be directly attributed to his defense being a steaming bag of crap because they let some important pieces walk (John Abraham and Brent Grimes) while losing a bunch of other guys to injury like Sean Wetherspoon

I'm starting to wonder if there is a correlation between game manager and the coach/system they are in.

Look at Andy Reid's history. In his system, with what he asks the QB to do, he's never really had a "game manager", where as if you look at someone like Marty, or Cowher, the system they believed in seemed to be about minimizing the damage a QB could do if things went haywire.

Watch him play. He's a game manager. He does not elevate his play or the play of those around him when the game is on the line.

Go look at the difference in the defensive statistics.

In 2012, they had the 5th best scoring defense in the NFL...last year they were 27th.

Going from giving up less than 300 points to giving up almost 450 is why that team lost so many games.

Look at Alex Smith for example in Reid vs Harbaugh.

I don't think it's any coincidence that most game managers happen to be the QB's of teams with a defensive minded HC.

I tend to think of Matt Ryan as not as much a game manager by coach/system etc, but more because of his physical skillset and mindset.

Im starting to think turnovers are more predictive QB stat than any other. Or more so, TD/TO stats.

If you are basing that strictly on 2013, sure you might have a partially valid point. If you are basing that on his whole body of work, I completely disagree.

The year he didn't have his stable of talent around him, he looked worse. I'd say thats game manager.
