Florida Planeteers....riding out the storm or evacuating?
It's my first weekend here in Florida and look what happens....Hurricane Matthew.


I lived in Columbia SC and they had the 1000 year flood there. Now they are experiencing one of the strongest hurricanes in several years.

Maybe I am the bad weather charm.

Most structures will survive the wind (especially post-Hurricane Andrew with enhanced building code requirements).

The storm surge is usually what kills people in these storms.

Here is an interesting article on how hurricanes get their name. It use to be all female names but apparently women were getting offended at that so now it is male and female names.

The names rotate every six years so the same name could pop up every six years. The exception to that rule is if the hurricane is determined to be particularly damaging are retired for legal and historical reasons. For example, the use of the name Katrina was retired in 2005 following the devastating impact that Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans.

It really is scary how fragile our infrastructure is and how much we all depend upon it.

Anyone remember the 9/11 thread on here? All the while it was going on I was thinking to myself, "What if these dumb bastards would be smart enough to fly those planes into a nuclear or electric energy generation plant or a dam?"

The people that stay might similar to weird people in KS (me) when there is a tornado warning. I don't go down into my basement, I sit outside by the barn or just inside, to watch. Mother Nature is awesome.
If it's at night, that can be a bit unnerving. The local radio is very good at reporting. Our county has a bunch of storm trackers. They give classes 2x a year for normal folks as well.

I will take a tornado over a hurricane. There are pro's and con's to both. Hurricanes don't surprise you. They are huge. I guess the only hope is that they lose power or that the brunt is a few miles away? Tornados can hop and skip. The chance of getting whacked is similar as to shark bites in the sea. Or as the Artillery Man would say "big sky, little bullet".

The biggest scare would be an F-5 tornado bearing down on your town at night.

New Orleans was taken down by A Cat 3 hurricane. This one is stronger, it's a Cat 4 hurricane. Glad to see you are taking it seriously. Wish some others were.
